“Good location, terrible service”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

I booked two rooms for me and my friends specifying that we needed early check in, when we arrived they told us we had to wait, whcih we did while having breakfast at the restaurant which is ok, cheap and decent, but after almost two hours they told us they didn´t have two rooms, only one and one at the sheela inn which is like a block away. When talking to the manager after making us wait two hours he denied I had booked two rooms!

So, we went to sheela inn which is also very close to the taj, with better service but pretty dirty rooms.

Located in the green belt around the Taj Mahal, so if that's what you are going for you are right there literally!!!!

Hotel was pretty basic. Room had two beds and nothing else. Air conditioning was nice and quiet, including a ceiling fan. No toilet paper supplied(extra charge), and the toilet was less than clean.

If you have a car you will not be able to get to this hostel though, you must take a rickshaw.

It's really close to the main gate (you do need to go to the gate 1km away for tickets though). Staff are okay, a bit short but not rude. Food was good, reasonably priced. Rooms are clean enough, but the water cooled fan air conditioner thing was really noisy, didn't cool the room and just filled it with flies!

This hotel is situated pretty much next door to the East Gate of the Taj Mahal. The ticket office is about 600 metres in the opposite direction, although there is a free bus to take you there and back (avoiding the hassle of rickshaws!) We were initially put in an air-cooled room, which was fairly basic, having paid for an air-conditioned room. As soon as the air-cooler was switched on, the room was full of mosquitos! We had to put up with it for one night before we were moved to our correct room.

The air-conditioned room was much more luxurious and well worth the extra rupees - you only have to share your room with the occasional lizard and they don't bother you!

The hotel also offers a basic food menu, which is cheap, tasty and available all the time. The service is friendly.

There is no wifi at the hotel but there are a couple of internet cafes nearby, if they are working. If they are, be warned you may be offered travel services!

The grounds of the hotel were very picturesque and relaxing and frequently visited by monkeys.

Agra itself can be quite stressful because of the constant hassling from rickshaw drivers. Be strong, be sensible and say no - don't feel pressured!

The hotel can arrange onward transport - however, the driver we had to Delhi first tried to take us to a marble shop, and then tried to charge us more upon arrival.

Overall, cheap, clean hotel in an ideal location and in relaxing surroundings.

Hotel Sheela is worth it because from the hotel through East Gate, across the sprawling Mughal gardens, and into the Taj Mahal could take you less than 5 minutes. At a very brisk pace. That's got to be the closest hotel/inn to the big tomb!

Room-wise, it's a bit less impressive. For starters, the place is overrun with tiny 4mm cockroaches. Literally teeming with them. If you are squeamish, take note. Compounding this is the windowless, no-breeze-amenity, with fan and AC. IF the electricity is on.

The restaurant within the compound serves diahorrea-safe bland food, and cool beer. Again, electricity is a problem in Agra so cool beer is a bonus.

The managers are no-nonsense seen-it-all-before types, but beneath their gruffness, I suspect they are nice blokes.

Overall, worth it because it's so damn close...
