“DO NOT GO: DANGER!!”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

On our way from Delhi to Jaipur, we decided to stop over to see the site. While it was a nice historical site, you could get the same or better of the same architecture in Delhi and Agra. Do not go to Fatepur Sikri! Everyone else that commented on the dangers are correct!! The minute we arrived in the parking lot, we got bombarded by "local guides" that seem young and harmless with fake Tour Guide IDs that look real. The guy actually didn't know anything about the place and instead took us to all his vendor friends and tricksters. The guide couldn't even enter the main site and handed us to someone else. At the end of the tour, he demanded for more money. When we refused, a bunch of hoodlums came towards us one by one surrounding the 5 of us. We were surrounded and fearful for our lives. We quickly gave half the money they demanded and quickly drove away. It is not worth going to this site.

“still impressive but one gets a bit spoiled”
Reviewed 7 March 2012

Historic setting : an old abandonned city
Careful with the guides they have this soap story about donating clothes for the poor people, what actually seems to happen. So they take you to this charity clothes seller and sell you someting scruffy for 10 times the price. If you want to donate find your own seller and do a deal. You get a scarf , flower petals and some strings to tie your wishes (don't tell anybody) to the marble screen inside the temple and there is another one who wants money. And then at the parking lot the usual scruffy stuff sellers.
But loved the visit but beware

“WOW! Don't miss”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

This complex, with the mosque and the tombs is amazing. Once you're visiting the palace, just walk out across the drive and enter. You have to take your shoes off... we carried ours for fear of their loss. If you want to go into any of the mosques/tombs, you have to have on long pants, and ladies, have a scarf for your head. Trust me, the locals will harshly let you know if you are underdressed! Make sure to go out the main gate and look at the view of the valley - wonderful.

“Ruined by touts...But in itself glorious!”
Reviewed 29 January 2012

BEWARE TOUTS.
The "guides" will prime you to enter the tomb and spout nonsense about how 3 wishes will be granted if you buy cloth to put over the tomb.
It is an elaborate scam.
Once you are taken to a slightly secluded spot then the games start.
A chap will be sitting on the floor and weave a tale about the mystic and his power to grant children which he apparently did for King Akbar 500 years ago.
Then he will show you frilly cloth which he will care fully avoid telling you the price of.
Then he will take out the biggest one, get you to bow down to it and then ask for RS 5100.
By now if you have your wits about you, you should leave ... However i made the mistake of saying that i cant afford the big cloth and i will pay for the smaller one instead.
That cost me Rs2100.
The priests or however they are inside want money for everything .
If you arent particularly religious then give it a miss.
As for me i shudder to thing what will be the state of this as a tourist destination in a few years time because i fervently hope people will take heed of my advice.
As an Indian tourist i consider my self to be reasonably savvy and i predict that if numbers fall the touts are only going to get more aggressive.
I hope the

“A great monument but in shameful condition”
Reviewed 28 January 2012

This is the best example of how a fantastic monument and one of the best tourist attractions in the country could be spoiled and turned into a hell by complete lack of control and administration. If I being an Indian feel this way, I really wonder how the foreign tourists would feel. I would recommend tourists to stay away from this area unless you already have some locals with you. This place is over run by touts who would keep insisting that you take them as guides and pressurize you into buying stuffs at exhorbitant rates. Unfortunately one of the biggest attractions of Fatehpur Sikri...the Buland Darwaza lies here which is one of Akbar's greatest creations.
