Don't come here expecting a cultural experience or anything drawing on the area's huge heritage. This is Marriott/Hilton -on-Taj and as has been mentioned its beginning to seem a bit tired. The Taj views from the upper floors are distant, but to be honest that shouldn't really be coming as a surprise. Our superior room was certainly adequate though the bathroom was very small.

Facilities-wise we didn't use the garden. The 24 hour multi-cuisine restaurant that also hosts the evening buffet was in our viiew very substandard, and nothing we ate there obver three breakfasts and a dinner there struck any positive notes. But then you come across the indian restaurant and those guys can really cook to the point where they delivered possibly the best Indian food of our 17 day stay, and without breaking the bank. So pretty poor in one respect and magnificent in another.

Same goes for the staff- front desk staff couldn't be more helpful, but then there was the boy who told us so many times that he made up our room every day that it crossed from mild amusement into irritation. And the concuerge who we asked for the address of a photo dealer and who didn't bother to get back to us. So a series of contradictions that average out to well, about average.

I believe the hotel considers itself five star. Well no, not by European/N American standards anyway. However the sad fact is that getting much better than this in Agra is going to cost you.

The Gateway Hotel, Agra, though belongs to the Vivanta brand of Taj, it failed to impress me. Its a good hotel but with low in luxury features. If you compare the hotel with the other Luxury hotels presence in Agra, you will be dissappointed. They have a great property but have spent little on rooms. The service is Taj standard but the food was not upto its mark. Altogether a good hotel, but if you want luxury experience, you have better choices

Room Tip: Ask for the room with garden view or the Taj view, if they have.

Yes, they do have views of the Taj Mahal, but only from rooms on the front. The roof is currently out of bounds due to security. Whilst the rooms were not the largest we experienced in India, they did have all the essentials. Restaurants and food were good; not too busy and the staff were attentive. Overall a very pleasant experience

Room Tip: Rooms on the front have view of the Taj Mahal
