“Great location, beautiful gardens, but somewhat run down”
Reviewed 8 January 2011

Due to its proximity to the Taj Mahal, our car couldn't get to the hotel. So we shlepped our bags the last 500 meters to the hotel. We were the only guests. The rooms were large with high ceilings, but their original glory had faded to stained walls and dripping sinks. Because it is a gov't hotel, too much paperwork to fill out upon arrival. Good food, and the kitchen staff were very friendly. If you stay here, don't forget to bring your sense of humor. Nice gardens with a view of the Taj Mahal.

reached agra by delhi shatabdi at 8.30am on 27th nov. people at the up tourism counter were very friendly and cooperative and gave us the directions. took a prepaid auto to shipgram (85 bucks). there auto wallahs tried to convince us that the hotel was very far away when it really was within walking distance.
stayed in one of the swiss cottages.
clean/ complimentary coke and bottle of mineral water for both of us.
staff friendly but nonchalant- arranged a car for fatehpur sikri
view from the mound was great to say the least. and the place is so quiet - out of bounds of touts that agra is so full of.
its very close to east gate of taj mahal and autos go straight uo to the east gate.
the tent becomes a bit chilly at night but theres a room heater.
complimentary breakfast was average.
couldnt afford amarvilas but i think taj khema made up for that in more ways than one

This hotel is a real mixed bag, and while overall, I would not recommend, I will try to be objective. My first tip is DO NOT BOOK A 'STANDARD' ROOM. These rooms are not inhabitable. We threw a huge fuss as all pictures of this place show the 'cottage rooms'. They eventually upgraded us for free, so my review is based on my experience in the "delux rooms".

PROS
1. Value- IF you can get a cottage room for £20-£30, it's decent value for Agra. The rooms are large, have tv, fridge, sitting area and most importantly, strong a/c (when the power is working)
2. Authenticity. There is something funky and Indian about this place.
3. Location. It's a 5 minute walk to the entrance of the Taj, BUT india being india, you have to walk back 15 mins to buy your tickets. Generally though, the location is very central, relatively quiet (dogs may bark), and safe. The 5 star hotels are just down the road.

CONS
1. For Western standards, it's 2star, low-end budget. Be under no illusions about this based on past reviews which may or may not have been rigged (many reviews are in N. India).
2. Delux rooms are glorified tents. This means bugs of all shapes and sizes can make there way in.
3. Not exactly "clean"- the sheets have tears and lots of dirt on them.

Inside the hotel, we've seen cows, goats, monkeys, peacocks, snakes, thousands of insects, and camels (walking by on the road, not inside hotel grounds like others). Whether this is a pro or con is a matter of personal preference.

I can only describe the experience as upscale camping...and if I were in Agra again, I would pay more to stay in better place.

The location and views from the gardens of the Taj are both fantastic, but be under no illusion that the hotel is basic and dirty and serves a grotty breakfast. There are no rooms with a view of the Taj from the window - we asked for one, but you can take a seat up on the mound and enjoy watching the light change on the awesome Taj Mahal.
You cannot get dinner here but it's a short minute walk to the main street and restaurants.
Also note that the hotel is inside the protected zone of the Taj complex and therefore you have to go 1km back up the road, away from the east gate, to get tickets and then return back again. Its not a big deal but don' be fobbed off that you can only get there by foot or tuktuk, there is a small bus that runs from outside the hotel to the ticket office and back down again.
All in all a pretty grotty place and not worth the view if you are visiting (why else are you there?) and you can get a roof terrace dinner at many other places and enjoy the sunsets.

Sometime around Jan 2009 end; we ended up using an extended weekend well - by planning a Road trip to Agra. I’ve been to Agra countless times, but some cities, like old wine, get better with every visit.
Agra (and I don’t suppose this comes as news to any one) is better known as the city of Taj. Though amongst other things, this beautiful city can safely boast of its handmade footwear, delicious petha (a traditional Indian sweet) and a heritage that dates back to the times of mughals!

Since Agra gets its fair share of tourists, there is no dearth of places to stay . We stayed at Taj Khema essentially because it’s practically a walking distance from the Taj. Also, the rooms are created like “tents” hence the name khema( an urdu word that means tent). Open , spacious and comfortable for January stay . Do not head here expecting 5 star luxury as it isn’t that kind of place at all , it’s a basic stay option in an interesting packaging to say the least which provides as a star attaraction an exotic view of Taj from your window.
Believe it or not , there is an official Taj View point – enjoy the splendor of Taj over a cup of coffee and some warm breakfast on a foggy morning being the highly attractive package here that’s the added attraction of this place.
There is a small in house restaurant that offers a limited choice but easy on the taste buds, variety of traditionally Indian food . they also deliver in the room which is a great plus point for tired travelers like us , at the end of the day , but one could hop across the road and enjoy the local street food with garam masala chai if you wish to truly enjoy the experience.
