Owner description: Experience the culture of Madurai with this private tour of its ancient temples. Spend approximately 45 minutes visiting each of the Dravidian temples built by the Pandyan and Madurai Nayak kings, earning the city its nickname Koil Maanagar, which means Temple City. Discover why Madurai, also called the City of Junctions or Koodal Nagaram, is one of India's most outstanding Hindu pilgrimage centers.

We Entered the temple from North Gate. When we entered there was a stunning view of temple SHIKHAR (tip) and an BIG ASIAN ELEPHANT in the courtyard. The surrounding are neat and clean, also footwear are not allowed inside the temple area. Provided is the free footwear stand, make use o it. there were pooja's and other offerings goining on in one of the madapams. The Main temple is of MEENAKSHI(PARVATI) and the other temple is of LORD SHIVA. But one thing to be noted only INDIANS are allowed into the main area temples where the holy idol can be seen and worshiped. All in all a must visit.

A big temple devoted the goddess Menakshi and god Sundareswar. It is not just a temple, but a place where Tamil language was patronised with a galaxy of great poets and scholars. One should never miss the last pooja around 9 pm where god Sundareswarar come to sleep in the Palliarai. The rituals are nice to watc.

If you're in the area, this is a must see. The temple is an amazing artifact. The temple is massive and you could spend days in there. I haven't done much research on my own, but the tour guide told us the temple isn't constructed using any mortar, all of the blocks are just placed upon each other to hold the temple. This was a pretty unique feature.

Inside the temple is the 1000 Pillars temple, which is also a great site.

The paintings, artwork, and statues are quite exotic. Most of the paintings have been refreshed over the years, but some of the work is original, which predates Jesus Christ.

Quite a site to see. Enjoy!

Very neat and easy to finish the Darshan. Pl ask for special ticlets (Rs.20, Rs.50 and Rs.100) to avoid long waits. Pl go either early in the morning (before say 0900 hrs) or after 1600 hrs as during the day wakling on the stones can be very difficult as Madurai is very hot.
