U forget that ur in madurai in the ambience & the location, the hill top drive and the rooms facing the nite lights of the city makes u forget and ease ur stress...complete relaxation guaranteed....i missed the spa cos of timings & hope it was great...swimming pool is superb & the walkway to the pool is great...peacocks here & there walking around makes the kids to dance....& they really njoy it...overall a good place...except for the authenticity in the food ...which can be little better....

It's a hill top resort, having cottages and rooms. It gives a nice view of the city. From the restaurant, the view of Meenakshi temple in the night will be very good. Wonderful place to stay. Food was very good and staff were very courteous. You will come across peacocks in the resort very often.

I was returning to the hotel after almost 4 years and was shocked to see it being down-graded as a "Gateway", the budget brand of Taj. The hill top resort property with its colonial cottages and spacious rooms lost none of its charm though. The gardens are as green and the peacocks as numerous and beautiful. The room tariff is quite low for this kind of a property and ambiance but the food is quite expensive and the options very limited. The sumptuous breakfast spread with authentic south Indian dishes, if included in the room rate, makes it a steal.
This is an old-world hotel, with quite a bit of walking and climbing to get around between lobby, restaurant, rooms, pool etc. - one should be pre-warned if they are not into this kind of physical activity.
Why would anyone look at other options in Madurai?

The location is incomparable. The hotel is situated on a hillock overlooking the city of Madurai far from the maddening crowds and the messy and dirty bazaar area but close enough to visit the city in comfort. The views are excellent. The Gopuras (towers) of the Meenakshi Amman temple are clearly seen. The famous Murugan shrine of Thirupparangkundram is also seen against the back drop of a gigantic rock outcropping - any of the staff will point out these sights. The staff are extremely helpful and courteous. The Taj does maintain its standards. I will have no problem recommending it to any visitor from the West. The place itself is a bit of paradise with a large flock of peacocks naturally resident here. There also a large variety of tropical birds flying around. If stay here as a stopover please consider planning on spending at least a half day to just walk around the premises.
The checkout process can be a bit slow.

Room Tip: The room we stayed in was excellent.

travelled to Madurai for business and chose to stay over for a couple of days in Taj - have a pretty good opinion on the current state of the property but cannot ignore the scope of improvment - some instances and pointers:

Smooth check-in - upgrade without haggling/pleading - nice clean spacious renovated room - lovely peacocks around - dinner (very average) for a Taj standard - great attempt by the staff to make up for the same - got me FRESH CUT mangoes as apology - room unable to open due to faulty lock - NO PHONE in corriodors - took about 25 minutes to open at 2300 hours - lovely morning - excellent view and "just my taste" prepared tea -

having spent a little more on upkeep and emphasising on some details - the property can become a "must stay" than a "can stay"...

Room Tip: next to the pool - breathtaking views and peacocks for company..
