I was returning to the hotel after almost 4 years and was shocked to see it being down-graded as a "Gateway", the budget brand of Taj. The hill top resort property with its colonial cottages and spacious rooms lost none of its charm though. The gardens are as green and the peacocks as numerous and beautiful. The room tariff is quite low for this kind of a property and ambiance but the food is quite expensive and the options very limited. The sumptuous breakfast spread with authentic south Indian dishes, if included in the room rate, makes it a steal.
This is an old-world hotel, with quite a bit of walking and climbing to get around between lobby, restaurant, rooms, pool etc. - one should be pre-warned if they are not into this kind of physical activity.
Why would anyone look at other options in Madurai?
