Coimbatore is a good city. It’s an industrious city, engaged mainly in the business of machine tools and textiles.
I love the smell of the Southern India, as the doors of the aircraft open, and you descend down the steps. It’s more gentler ; has a hint of sandalwood and incense, and you’re aware that you’re arriving at a much lower altitude. The warmth in the air (especially during the summers) is unmistakable.
The airport itself is smallish, and very ordinary. A product of pre-liberalized India. But what’s good is that you can be up and away into the mountains in less than 30 minutes.
Ooty. Coonoor, Valparai, TopSlip and Munnar are some of the mountainous delights in store for the nature lover.
Before you exit for higher climes, see if you can make some time for the Southern Masala Dosa. The Dosas here are the real McCoy, unlike the ubiquitous thrash you’re served in Mumbai. The chutneys (white, green and red) are unique to every hotel, like the signature of every establishment.
Another speciality of the South is that you find a lot ‘characters’. And I mean it in a good way. One such character is freelance private taxi operator Mr. Jagadeesh (Mobile :[--] ). He is a veritable motormouth, who is native to the area, hence has a lot of knowledge, stories and useful tips. We hired him for 4 days, for our journey to TopSlip (see my review) and onwards to Rose Gardens, Munnar (see my review). Just make sure to fix the final cost with Mr. Jagadeesh, should you use him.
