This hotel really does have an amazing view of Lake Pichola and the Lake Palace. It is centrally located and you can finally walk everywhere. The food is good and not that expensive given the room prices. But the hotel itself was very expensive - the price was equal to prices we paid in some very luxurious hotels. This is not a luxury hotel -- it seems to be an old house converted into a hotel, without any amenities that would warrant such a high price (like the swimming pool). The internet was never properly working, it was extremely slow, which was rather disappointing for this type of hotel. As we walked around and took a boat ride, we realized there are several other hotels that are located on the lake and provide great views as well. If view is what you are after, check out these other hotels before making a final decision, as they may be a better deal. This one will always remain as an option.

We stayed at Jagat Niwas for 4 nights towards the end of a 3+ week 'grand tour' of Northern India, booked through India Someday. Our room rate here was the highest on the entire tour, for our 3rd best hotel out of 7. Udaipur is a popular resort however and this seems a reflection of what the local market will bear.
The hotel stands on the shore of Lake Pichola in the old quarter of the city down some very steep, narrow, winding lanes. Officially there is no access for cars here so if you are arriving by car your driver may have to hand you over to a tuk-tuk for the last mile or so, as did ours, although as appears the local police do sometimes turn a blind eye - for a backhander perhaps! Conveniently just by the hotel entrance there is a small transport booking cum currency exchange establishment, also selling various tourist necessaries including Cadbury's chocolate!
Access to your room - and to the hotel restaurant is up steep flights of stone steps, open to the sky, scaling the inner walls of the central courtyard. Book elsewhere if you haven't a head for heights - or if you have bad knees, there is no lift! Some premium rooms have lake views - as did ours - but views from the restaurant and from what I am bound to call the 'top deck', the flat roof onto which the restaurant also extends from the floor below, are far better - and come free.
The restaurant is excellent, good value for money, and the drinks list includes a fine selection of remarkably cheap cocktails. Many of the diners during our stay appeared to be non-residents. Particularly at the height of the season, you will be well-advised to book a table.
So far so fairly good - but our room was a let-down. The lake view, across the rooftop, wasn't so very special. No wardrobe, no drawers, no storage space whatsoever save only a hanging rail in a shallow alcove. Faute de mieux we lived out of our suitcases. A bedside light on one side of the bed only. The safe didn't work, and wasn't bolted to the wall in any case. We had altogether better featured rooms - and far cheaper - in two homestays earlier on our tour. Power cuts are as frequent in Udaipur as elsewhere in India and we seemed to be pretty much next door to the noisy emergency generator.
A mixed experience. We might stay here again but would want to choose our room rather carefully. More likely, we'd stay elsewhere but sometimes eat here.

Room Tip: No point in going to the expense of a 'lake view'. However rooms towards the lake side of the hotel are furthest from that noisy generator.

Located in the heart of Udaipur old city area and on the lake shore of Pichola.
No frontage, no garden but a fantastic view of the Lake, Hotel , Palaces and Sunset.
Simple restaurant with good food and fantastic view. Approaching roads to this hotel is very narrow and vehicles registered in other than Rajastan are not permitted in these area, Such vehicle are parked in a particular spot and you have to use a local auto.
City Palace, shopping centre, and boat rides are in walking distance.

Room Tip: Rooms does not have view but restaurant have fantastic view for all customers.

We spent a couple of nights in Nagat Niwas during our trip around north India. This was out favourite hotel in the whole trip. Beautiful views and great location. It is great to have dinner in the roof terrace and to chill out in one of the little terraces. We will come back!
