“Yummy”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

The staff were very welcoming and the venue is so pretty, we went for dinner so the lights surrounding the lake were reflected in the water as we ate. The food was delicious and not at all expensive.
We thoroughly recommend it.

“The biggest mistake”
Reviewed 3 March 2012

First impressions can often be wrong. At first entry, you imagine that you are in for something of a treat. Unfortunately, everything slides downhill from that point, despite the lovely (traffic noise pollution-affected) lakeside view.

Firstly, although we had reserved a table many days before arrival, we were ushered away from the one 'Reserved' table to a table away from the lake edge, until with some persuasion, we were allowed to sit there. It is worth mentioning that we were also the first guests of the entire evening.

As it was early evening, the mosquitos were beginning to play, so we requested a mosquito coil. After two further requests, after 30 minutes or so, one arrived, and was promptly positioned downwind of us. Incredulity greeted our suggestion that we move it so that the smoke actually protected its, not the lawn downwind of it.

Our meals were lacklustre. A fish dish almost defied biological explanation. On dissection, it appeared to have a carbon life form base, but its consistency (slightly slimy) and tastelessness suggested that rather than being carbon-based, it had been carbon-filter treated to remove all flavor altogether.

A 'lamb' curry accompanied it. If this was lamb, then there is life on Mars. Mmmm .... OK. That might still be possible. There is life on the sun ..... Tough, sinewy mutton-chomp lumps thrown into a universal Indian curry slop was presented as the best dish on the menu (recommended by the waiter). As a New Zealander, I admit I have very high expectations of lamb. Even so - this was certainly not lamb. Unless the definition is somewhat different in Udaipur.

Drinks were sparse. There was effectively no 'alcohol' drinks menu. You were presented with a verbal list. Beer, red or white wine (what??? - is this the 1970's?), or whisky. Cocktails - impossible.

Service, while technically sufficient, was indifferent.

If you wish to use the toilets, you must get staff assistance. They are not labelled. Not only are they not labelled, but at regular intervals staff slip by the light switches for them and switch the power off, so you really have no idea where to go. You may go to the bathroom, exit, and turn to use the sink to wash your hands, only to find that staff have switched off the external light for the sink while you were inside 'occupied', so that you can't easily see to use the soap and clean yourself.

Come time to pay, we had to request the bill three times. Despite previously answering the waiter's enquiry as to 'how our meals were?' with a complaint that the fish dish was well below expectation (and we complain VERY rarely!), this dish still appeared on the bill. 1,000 r for two people. Quite frankly, you could eat 5 times over for this in Thailand, with 10 times the quality, so regrettably we are unable to recommend this restaurant, unless you are visiting Udaipur with your boss, you really don't like them, you've eaten well first, and you want some unsophisticated entertainment. The beer comes well chilled so that should get you by while you watch them suffer ....

We note that this restaurant has several prior 'Excellents'. If these are genuine non-owner non-staff comments .... life is inexplicable.

Our recommendation - Ambrai. And stay away!

“Don't Miss It”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

Raaj Bagh was our favorite restaurant in Udaipur, and one of the best we’ve found anywhere in India. It offers a good menu selection, with Indian, Chinese and Continental fare. The dishes are all freshly prepared, so they can be spiced to individual taste (important for those of us who aren’t fond of overly-chilied Indian foods). The main courses are more than ample in quantity and attractively presented. The staff is friendly and extremely helpful; they not only provided knowledgeable information about the food, but were a great help with suggestions about local attractions. The restaurant is located right on Fateh Sagar Lake, with indoor and outdoor seating and lovely views. Hint: Be sure to save room for dessert – the kheer with pear compote is extraordinary!
