“An amazing stay in Jodhpur”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

I stayed two nights at this wonderful homestay in Januray 2012, and have taken a lifetime of memories back with me. We had a lovely three-bed family room with a balcony. It was well furnished and very clean. The attached bathroom had running hot and cold water. The house is situated in a slow neighbourhood, and hence was immensely enjoyable in its quietness. The host and the hostess were most cordial and extended all sorts of help to us. I will be specially thankful for hostess Bhavnaji's helpful recommendations that led us to have a great time in Jodhpur. Yes, I'd like to be back here, definitely so.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top are quite private, and the one on top of the garage is a seperate unit by itself.

We spent 6 nights over Christmas at Indrashan with Chandra and Bhawana with our two young boys and we could not have made a better choice. We were given a great room that easily fitted the 4 of us and the room was spotless and well decorated. we were welcomed into the home and our hosts did everything they could to help us. They organised our rickshaw driver while in Jodphur and also their driver to take us to Jaisalmer and look after us there, which took a lot of the trouble out of sorting transport. The food every night (a fantastic home cooked help yourself buffet) was great and the open courtyard with fire and everyone around it eating made for a casual and great way to meet fellow travellers and swap stories. We would unreservably recommend Indrashan to anyone and for a young family that little bit of extra home factors made all the difference. The location near the train station and airport but in a quiet suburb made all the difference as we had a break from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, which from living in Mumbai we were happy to avoid.

Room Tip: If you travel with young children and want to put them to bed before main dinner get a courtyard roo...

We stayed at Indrashan, my husband, grown son and I, from the end of January till early February....three nights and found it quite perfect! Our rooms were lovely and immaculate. After having dinner with the Singhs the first evening we chose to eat there all our nights as the food and the company were exceptional. We loved sitting around the fire for dinner on cool evenings and appreciated the location...in a quiet residential neighborhood yet just a short ride to the old city.Being out of the chaos of the old city was perfect for us. In the morning we walked to the corner and found a tuk tuk immediately to go Ito town and having checked out some of the hotels we had considered in the old city we were thrilled with our decision to stay with the Singhs and NOT in town!

Room Tip: Both of our rooms were large and lovely with comfortable beds, clean and attractive bath, extra cover...

My boyfriend and I stayed at Indrashan for three nights in February 2012. Overall, we enjoyed our visit, but feel that there may be better options for first-time visitors to Jodhpur because of the homestay's distance from the city center.

Indrashan's location is in a residential neighborhood or suburb of Jodhpur. Therefore, you have to hire an auto rickshaw and drive about 20 minutes to get to the center of the city since there are no restaurants, etc., around the homestay. While the homestay has a relationship with a reliable rickshaw driver, the distance was still inconvenient and added to the overall cost of our stay. The lack of internet access during our stay also amplified the sense of distance for us, since we were eager to keep in touch with friends and family during our travels. While the hosts explained that the homestay ordinarily has wireless internet access, it was not functioning during the three days that we visited.

Our room itself was comfortable, spacious and clean, although it was slightly chilly and noisy at night (mostly dogs barking and other neighborhood sounds).

The home-cooked Rajasthani dinners served around a campfire were the highlight of staying at Indrashan. Bhavna is a wonderful cook and was extremely accommodating of our food preferences (vegetarian, not too spicy). The dinners also provided a fun opportunity to meet and chat with other guests and travelers. If we planned our trip over again, we might stay in a more central location and come to Indrashan for dinner to sample the delicious cuisine and meet the guests.

We felt that the hosts, Bhavna and Chandra, were nice people and very accommodating, but we did not really experience the extremely warm atmosphere described by some other reviewers. Looking back, one suggestion for the hosts might be to provide more of an orientation to guests upon arrival -- e.g., explaining where the homestay is located within the city and providing a city map, giving more of a tour of the homestay and introduction to the staff, providing information about internet access, and providing a list and price chart for dinners, drinks, and other services. When we asked about cooking lessons (a suggestion made in other reviews), we learned that the price for both of us to take a lesson would be 3000 rupees. Instead, we chose to take a three-hour jeep tour of some of the local villages outside the city (only 1350 rupees). The hosts also operate a small touring agency and we would recommend the village tour as a very interesting experience.

Overall, we loved the food and the house is quite comfortable, but it was just really too far from central Jodhpur for us. We'd recommend a heritage hotel closer to the city center with a dinner outing to Indrashan.

Finally, note that Indrashan does not accept credit cards.

My friend I stayed here in January 2012 based on the reviews on Tripadvisor. Unfortunately, we didn't realize just how far out of the old city it was - way too far to recommend. There are lovely heritage places for less or the same money in Jodhpur.

It seems that many people loved it due to the hospitality they received. Unfortunately, I can't say we received the same.

When we arrived in the evening, we had already had dinner in the city. The owner asked us if we would be joining them (and the other guests) for dinner. When we said no, he just showed us to our room. Didn't offer tea or a drink, or to join them after dinner when they congregated in the living/eating area. He was leaving early the next morning, so we didn't see him for the remainder of our stay there.

We stayed in their son's room which was nice enough - the bathroom was well done - although when I went to use the sink, the hose/pipe fell from the bottom without me realizing it & the floor was soaked.

Given that we stayed in their home, far from the old city - the price was definitely not worth the stay. Perhaps if they had been as welcoming as the other reviewers indicated, I would rate it as average. But I guess if you aren't willing to pay for their dinner, they aren't willing to talk to you...
