“A friendly familiy guesthouse”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2011

After a few weeks of travelling, as a woman alone, in India I decided to be a little bit more picky about my accomodations. So I walked around in Jodhpur for quite some time. I found the Ganpati Guesthouse. What a nice place! The owner was not forsing me to take the room, just friendly. And after I saw a few rooms I was convinced. This was a very nice and clean Haveli. The room I had was spacious too. Not too noisy. So I really enjoyed my stay here. The owner took a lot of time to explain me about Jodhpur.
I would really recommend this place!

Ganpati is run by the same family that owns the excellent Shivam Paying Guest House nearby, both featured in various guidebooks. Ganpati's history is slightly more checkered - the property shut down for a spell a few years back - but is now well on the way to Shivam's lofty standards.

Rajendra, the owner, trained as an engineer and now applies the same vigor to his new occupation. And thank goodness, because it's the little things that make guest houses enjoyable. They need to be islands of pleasant surprise in India where backpackers and other travelers fight and concede small battles all day.

As Ganpati's nine rooms get up and running, you'll find squeegees in the bathroom so the floor doesn't stay wet all day after a shower. The hot water actually works during the broad hours advertised. Carpets shelter your delicate feet from the cold of the marble and you may wake to a mural of a buxom Rajasthani woman in the traditional style. There's no dust, no out of place smells. The windows lock! All of those little headaches that you come across in most of India's budget accommodation are conspicuously missing.

If that weren't enough to tempt visitors, it's also at the foot of Jodhpur's biggest attraction, Mehrengarh Fort, and it's rooftop restaurant has a fantastic view of it (also a decent spot for yoga if that's your bag). The staff smile and have all the necessary advice for navigating the city. The food is quite good as well, though the filter coffee still needs tinkering (the espresso, on the other hand, is right on).

As Rajendra continues to scour the city for gorgeous furniture and fresh inspiration, Ganpati should keep getting better. But it's worth a lengthy stay now. Great value for money. Highly recommended.

We could book the hotel online without any fuss.[no credit card or pay in advance].As promised we were picked from the railway station on time[and dropped back also].
What made the stay memorable was ofcourse the staff of the hotel. The hotel owner,mr.virendra singh[a govt.school teacher], a softspoken man, guided us wisely and helped us organise our travel plans. The village safari and the camel safari arranged by him were marvellous and wonderfully memorable. The food, the master cook, mr.mahesh and his assistant, chotu[forgot his name]who makes wonderful coffee have also made the stay noteworthy. The room that we stayed [room no.301] had an unrestricted view of fort. The staff of the hotel never intimidated us in any way.We could enjoy each moment of that five days we spent in jodhpur in the most glorious way.highly recommended place for all those who visit jodhpur.

We were heading to Ganpati's sister guest house (Shivam), which was (un)fortunately full and were directed to Ganpati.

The room was clean, modern and quiet. The location is great as its only a couple of minutes walk from the main clock tower. However, what really set it apart from a lot of other guest houses in India was the staff - they were amazingly helpful with planning our days in jodhpur and arranging / suggesting onward travel options. We were even invited to join one of the staff members brother's weddings which was amazing.

We are from Portland Oregon having an extended trip throughout India. We planned to stay for just two nights in Jodhpur but ended up staying for five. The Ganpati guesthouse is in a great location, just 10 minutes walk to the Fort and a short walk to the Clock Tower market yet it is on a nice quiet street. The rooms are super clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. There is a nice rooftop cafe with great unrestricted views of the fort and overlooking the city. By far the nicest and best value guesthouse we have stayed at in India. I would highly recommend staying here if you are travelling to Jodphur.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Ganpati is set in a 300 year old traditional style building which has several floors approached by an easy staircase. There are 12 traditionally decorated, spacious and well ventilated rooms with private bathroom. Some rooms offer dazzling views of the famous Meharangarh fort through the bay windows. It is a good mix of modern comfort and traditional architecture. On the top level is a restaurant serving home cooked food. On the menu there are not only Indian, continental and Italian dishes available but also real brewed coffee with an espresso machine. A large cup of cold coffee with vanilla ice cream is really an exception in Jodhpur. Ganpati is just a few hundred metres north of the bustling Sadar market clock tower. Ganpati is run by a gentle, friendly and helpful family. We would appreciate it if you stay with us and encourage a non commission paying set up to stop spoiling tourism. One can experience a traditional family atmosphere by staying with us. We put extra effort into making our guests' stay not only comfortable but also memorable as so many guests write us back when they go back home. We also organize 'bishnoi village safari' for half a day and we are proud to say that we are the founder of the camel safari around Osiyan in the great Indian Thar desert where one can go for an overnight trip in the desert, camping/home stay and camel ride. ... more   less
