Some of the older forts in Rajhastan had just empty rooms.

“Straight from a fairy tale”

A fine place to wander and get lost in the little streets. Lovely things to buy and not too much hassle from the traders, but you can get the same stuff outside the fort for lower prices.

“Living Fort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2012

I used to wonder how people lived in the forts whenever we visited the ruins of forts. We got an opportunity to see this first hand when we visited Jaisalmer Fort.It is one of two living forts in India where the decendants of original inhabitants still live, the other is Chittorgarh. Jaisalmer Fort is very well maintained as people still live there and the best way to explore it is leisurely on foot. There are many winding lanes lined with houses and shops and many restaurants offering fantastic views of the city from their terraces. They offer an amazing variety of local and international food. No one is in a hurry and you can sit as long as you like looking at the views. The daytime and nighttime views are both beautiful. The city has maintained its character and all buildings are made of the glowing yellow sandstone and have traditional architecture. There is not a single building with bright colors or steel and glass. It is charming and just wandering around the city is a visual treat. The people are friendly, honest and hardworking.A lot of hand embroidered bed sheets are available at really good prices ,only thing is they are heavy and you need space in your luggage to carry it back home . We had to pay excess baggage for the first time in our life at the airport but it was worth it.

“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2012

The old fort at the top of the hill is just stunning. It's like stepping back in time. Working your way there through the 'new' town surrounding the fort on the slopes of the hill is an experience, then the fort itself is another entirely.
