“Nice place”
Reviewed 31 March 2012

I was a bit apprehensive as i had booked this resort through an acquaintance and did not have any reviews. Once i reached the place the apprehension disappeared. The first impression was good. The place is quiet. Service is excellent, you cant expect more. We were the only customers. They had arranged for a person to escort us from the highway which was a nice thing to do as it is in a secluded area. Camel safari was a unique experience. The tea on the sand dunes at sunset was the highlight. The tents were clean and comfortable. The sanitary fittings needed amendments in one tent. The evening entertainment was ok , dinner was a bit spicy for the kids. The overall ambiance and feel of the place was really nice. The major drawback was that it got really cold at night and in spite of warm clothing, the blankets proved insufficient. Do make sure to ask for extra blankets at night.

Room Tip: Extra blankets in winter are a must

Overall, a pathetic experience. Regret having chosen Royal Desert Safari Camp

- When I reached Fort Rajwada, Jaisalmer for getting the voucher for camp, we had to wait over 20 minutes, had to ask 3 times for water which was not even served.

- Manager named Yogendra Kumar was not courteous at Fort Rajwada. When a foreigner couple came in for checking in, we were shocked when he asked (not requested) my wife to get up from the seat at reception and offered it to one of those foreigners. He literally said “Madam, jara khade ho jao”. I didn’t take it up there with him as I didn’t want to create a scene as well as we were in a hurry.

- On checking in at the Camp at scheduled time i.e. 3 p.m., we were supposed to be served a welcome drink. Leave that aside, we were served tea on 4-5 reminders and that too after an hour or so.

- There was no drinking water available in the camp. It was only available in the tent which was the venue for so called “New Year Gala Dinner”. One had to buy mineral water (which didn’t matter to us since we buy that anyway) which was also delivered after couple of reminders every time.

- Camel ride guys took us to the sand dunes and every guy was returning to take there pax back around sun-set. Our guy asked for Rs. 100 each per pax for carrying us back to the camp which were supposed to be free. And besides this charge, there was supposed to be a bakhshish (tip) which is a fixed at atleast Rs. 100 per camel. The guests don’t have a choice but to pay especially when you have small kids, wind is chilly and weather getting cooler.

- There was no water initially in the toilet, when requested/reminded couple of times, chilled water came and after several further reminders the hot water came in.

- Snacks were as bad as they could get with dinner following the suit. For a price of Rs. 4,250 (roughly $ 100) plus taxes per person, it was definitely not value for money. I wouldn’t pay more than Rs. 500 per person for such food and snacks, that too considering that it was a new year eve. Else, we won’t even have it for 100 bucks per head.

- Feedback from other fellow guests: Drinks prices were exorbitantly high.

- The quality of DJ and sound system was bad. Music would stop anytime, speakers of bad quality, sometimes the music came in like the ones you hear from the bandwalas in rural areas in the baraat in front of the groom’s ghodi.

- Breakfast was ok.

- The stay was not value for money. The rates were comparable to a 5 star hotel but the service was comparable to a local vendor. In fact, on 30th Dec night, we paid Rs. 350 per head at Sam Sand Dunes (stay not included) which included half an hour camel safari, snacks around 6.30 p.m., folk dance/program till 11 pm followed by dinner. This was much better than Royal Desert Safari camp.
