“A great initiative of responsible tourism in Thar Desert”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2012

We visited Pabu Ki Dhani during 3 days around Christmas this year. We highly recommend travelers who want to discover the local culture and life in the desert to stay at Pabu Ki Dhani for at least 2 or 3 nights. You will be warmly welcomed by Pabu and Capucine, a lovely Indian-French couple and their family. The traditional huts they built are simply but comfortably furnished. We appreciated the peacefulness of their location. Don’t expect too much about accommodation, remember that you are staying in the desert with no electricity and running water. This is part of the experience if you want to really discover how people live and escape the hustle and bustle of Indian cities.
You will enjoy sharing daily life in the desert with the host: meals, discussions, games with the children and live Rajasthan-music around camp fires in the evenings.
To enhance local’s living conditions, the travelers can participate to several activities: camel safari (which is a great chance to enjoy the quietness of the desert), excursion in the surrounding villages (meeting local craftsmen and potter) and traditional music lessons. You can also help their community by contacting the Malenbai organization which aims to develop schooling in this area. Do not hesitate to ask Capucine before or during your stay how you can help them.
Do not forget that this great initiative helps dozen of families from this area by providing jobs thus better living conditions.

This is my first review on Tripadvisor, and it had to be for Pabu Ji and Capu. Their "Dhani" is about 45min from Jaisalmer. The roads are fantastic considering you are no where near a metro/big city. Pabu Ram ji wl guide you to his dhani which is 2kms off the main road.

On reaching around lunch time, Capu was awaiting our arrival with a smile and lovely lunch (raita, rice, dal and desert roti's). In the eve after resting for a bit, all us sat around a bonfire where Pabu Ji and Capu sang and i must add, Capu played the "Khadtal" very well!!

Pabu Ji and Capu also arrange for a village tour, which we were not able to go for as we stayed there only for a night and were very tired.

The huts were cool in the afternoon and warm in the night, i had the most restful sleep in ages.... the food was awesome (served in clay bowls made by the local potter) we actually got 2 back home and belive me food tastes better in them.

We left the next day after another satiating meal of roti's ,curd and garlic chutney.

I shall refrain from writing too much about how this one night stay has made an impact on my life..... will just say, if you want to see what being happy truly mean's, please go to meet Pabu Ji and Capu and their beautiful children.

I regret not staying there longer. But i will do myself a favour and go back again.

Its not a place for people who cant do without electricity and running water and air-conditioning.

For the ones who can.....JUST GO.

Escape the tourist crowds of Jaisalmer to stay with Pabu and his family in Thar desert. See and experience Indian desert life in its all beauty, while coming to understand what it means to live in a harsh landscape, dictated by deep seeded socio-political injustices. The accomodation is basic but you will have everything you need. Sleep in cool mud huts in the perfect still and quiet calm of the desert. Trust me you will never have a better sleep!! Eat fresh cooked food and watch the stars by the campfire. Pabu, Capucine and their beautiful children will make you feel so welcome and will proudly show you their life in the desert. This is an experience for people who want to immerse themselves in the real India and understand more of it's culture. It's casual but clean and Pabu and Capucine will do everything to accomodate you in their home. What a special place!!! Take me back!

Come to experience what desert India is truly about. The difficulties of living in the desert. How people survive. The love that exists as different families and casts help one another to live. There are always members of the massive Pabu di Khani extended family coming and going as it is a place of love and giving and sharing so you will meet many beautiful local people during your stay. Learn all about it and open your eyes and your heart to the purest of experiences. Visit the many communities and local artisans around the area and learn about pottery, carpet weaving with goat hair, beading, embroidery, patchwork, cooking, dancing, music and pure desert life. We woke up as the sun came up, ate delicious desert food, counted shooting stars, spotting flamingoes, swam in the river, listened to desert music each night around the camp fire while eating damper like bread which we were taught to make and then cook in the ashes. Hopefully the time will come soon when I can visit again. It's the kind of place you can visit on your own or with a group of people. It's perfect in every which way.

Pabu and his family are the best option for the Thar desert and the surroundings for Jaisalmer. The huts are very confortable, you can sleep the whole night with the only sounds of the night and under the stars. The location is very nice with the lake, the excursions are top interesting, but overall Pabu, Capucine and their people can give you such a wonderful experience in the dessert like anybody else there. The food was allways delicious from breakfast till dinner and we had the possibility to learn with them so many things about culture, music, food and the life of the desert people. We arrived for 3 days and stayed finally 5 and we didn´t want to leave them! Thank you very much Pabu for your resistance and fight!
