“Great place for the price”
Reviewed 8 January 2012

We stayed here in Dec 2011. Clean n basic place for very low price. Location is also good, walkable from the city center n market area. Good authentic places to eat and drink (hot kadai saffron milk from a road side stall) are just near. Even we ate imarti (Indian sweet ) freshly being made from a road stall in the night after normal shops were closed.
Hotel itself has no kitchen but if we ask owner makes tea/milk in morning from his own family kitchen and gives. You could also give clothes to wash for around 25cents /piece. It was very handy for us as we were traveling for 10 days. They have a big bathroom and terrace too (if u wish to dry yr own laundry). It is a small house turned into guest house. If you wish to see a typical old style Indian houses, it gives u a shot on that.
things to improve on : small snacks and tea/coffee facility. Alternate power arrangement as power cut was in morning (so for few minutes we were in total dark , till we asked for candle etc).
But for price we pay, this is best place.

Stayed here two nights in Dec 2011. Kamal and family were lovely, offering friendly (fabulous) service and great recommendations about what to see/do in the area. The street-facing room was spacious, bright, and clean, with a great view of a local village market and the most comfortable bed I've had in India.

Easy access to everything a traveler could want, and by far a top value in Jaisalmer.

Thanks, Kamal!!

Room Tip: Select the street-facing room, if available.

There's no doubting that owner Kamal and his brother were really friendly and hospitable during our stay at Gajanand Guest House. Despite this warm hospitality, the lovely natural light in our room, and the great price, there were a number things that could have made our stay even better. We felt that our room, while light, nice and spacious, could have been a little better maintained (e.g. bathroom floor did not appear to have had a thorough clean with clumps of hair blocking the drain and plastic razor cover sitting on the sink; toilet seat and lid was detached from the bowl making going to the toilet more adventurous than it needed to be; did not have one hot shower during our stay - possibly due to a malfunctioning boiler). Also, while we were picked up from the train station at 6am free of charge and allowed to rest in Hotel Ganesh behind Gajanand, Kamal had not guaranteed that we could stay at Gajanand Guest House on our first day (despite having previously made a reservation via email). We were offered to stay at Hotel Ganesh on our first night but we were adamant that we would prefer to stay at Gajanand from our first day in Jaisalmer. Our reservation was eventually honoured by Kamal and we were able to stay without any further queries or worries about our booking/s. We felt that our reservation should have been honoured without us having to push it. All in all, it was a good stay at a good price.

Room Tip: If you're looking for some natural light, windows and a bit of fresh air, ask for the room on th...

Reviewed 20 November 2011

We stayed here for 3 nights in Nov 2011. This is a lovely family-run guesthouse just off Ghandi Chowk, a short walk through the bazaar to the fort entrance. The owner, Kamal, was very welcoming and friendly and we spent quite alot of time in his internet cafe (internet is free for guests) drinking chai & talking. The best example of his great service - we booked our room through hostelworld and before we contacted him, he emailed us to ask whether or not we wanted a pick-up from the bus stop. When we didn't reply (through lack of email access), he tried to call us and even though we didn't pick up and arrived late in the night, he guessed which bus we were on, met us on the bus and took us to his guest house.
The rooms were the cleanest we've seen in India so far. Ours was bright (overlooking the market below through some carved haveli-type balcony windows) and spacious.
There was no hot-water in the bathroom, but it wasn't necessary at that time of year and I think it is available at other times. Toilet paper isn't provided but is available (as well as drinks etc.) from the internet cafe at very reasonable prices.
This guest house is also relatively close to a sunset view point from which most of Jaisalmer can be viewed (which isn't mentioned in most guidebooks inc. Lonely Planet so ask Kamal for directions) - however, be prepared to be hassled by children.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Jaisalmer and it was in no small part due to the hospitality and friendliness from Gajanand Guest House and the family that run it.

Note: We had initially booked bed & breakfast through hostelworld but that isn't currently available so the price paid was lower than advertised on the HostelWorld website. Kamal is aiming to have a rooftop restaurant ready for next season, so I'm sure that will only make staying there a more enjoyable experience.

The rooms in Gajanand guesthouse are clean, nice and cheap.
The owner is really nice and was very helpful finding a Camelsafari for the next day. And the owner doesn't push you to buy a camel safari, he doesn't even sell ones...
For Camelsafari we had KHETA a camel man (phone: 9571096265), it was awesome!!!

You can have free wifi what you can't always take for granted in India.
Great choice, Great stay, great house!

And take care: at the trainstation somebody wanted to bring us to our guesthouse for free and on the way he wanted to sell us his hotel instead for that one we've already had booked. so maybe pick up service would be advisable.
