It is the most important attraction of Pondicherry. The people from all over the world come to this beautiful divine place. In the center of building there is Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother(formerly known as Mirra Alfassa) under shaded trees. The visitors come and sit quietly around Samadhi and meditate.
A limited number of rooms are available in Ashram guest houses for short visits but most of the time they are fully booked. it is advisable to make reservations in advance. While the visitors can enter the main building freely during visitors hours, some sections require pass to enter.
The Bureau Central Office, designed as an exhibition hall, also provides an introduction to the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother and their method of spiritual practice , through permanent exhibits of photographs, captions, text, videos and books in different languages.
Shoes, mobile and photography are not allowed inside. The visiting hours are from 6 AM to 12 noon and 4 PM to 6 PM daily.
Visit for divine experience !!

Meditation center, not a tourist attraction, be respectful. Shoes off outside guarded opposite. Phones off. Follow the carpet to the Samadhi where they both lie under a beautiful blanket of flowers. Go around and sit somewhere to meditate. Try to ignore the instructions of the 'officials' without offending so you don't lose the atmosphere... they tend to be intrusive :-(
Afterwards visit the bookshop for the most complete collection of their works in many languages.
Enjoy the vibrations!

Founded in 1926 under the Mother's guidance, is I believe one of the top tourist attractions here.
People are flocking the Ashram in great numbers to visit the Samadhi of both Sri Aurobindo and the Mother(formerly known as Mirra Alfassa) - it is located at the center of the Ashram in a tree-shaded courtyard. You can also see the works of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, which have been put up in a gallery in the Ashram. It is here that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived most of their lives.
No mobile phones, cameras are allowed inside the ashram - you must switch off your phones.
You have to enter the ashram barefoot.
In the ashram, I was surprised to find more foreigners in there than the Indians - who were set in deep meditation and observing pin drop silence.
It is a quiet place for retreat.
The Ashram according to Sri Aurobindo," has been created with another object than that ordinarily to such institutions, not for the renunciation of the world, but as a center and a field of practice for the evolution of another kind and form of life which would in the final end be moved by a higher spiritual consciousness and embody a greater life of spirit."

There is an immense practice of Integral Yoga with a motive to transform human life to divine life.

Cheers to life!!

This places has cultural and spiritual significance, so do take out time to visit it. The ashram isn't usually crowded but do check on the visiting hours. The ashram has samadhis so it is a very quiet place and you are asked to maintain utmost silence. There is a book store on there where you can purchase books on Shri Aurobindo, mother, meditation, yoga etc. A non elaborate, simple and peaceful place dedicated to a legend who contributed to not only the Indian national freedom, but also yogic culture and spiritualism alike.
