Unspoilt and harmless beach in non monsoon season, friendly and sincere people, non polluted place.Well equipped Scuba Diving Center which is capable of giving PADI certification is run at Agatti. Swimming was thoroughly enjoyable.Sunrise and sunset is spectacular in this island.Visited coir making area, musuem, fire station of agatti and the other dead end. Found people to be very soft and mostly muslims are here .All tourists visiting Lakshadweep needs to carry "ENTRY PERMIT". To obtain the same provide name, age, place of birth & address at the time of booking. Foreigners have to submit copy of passport.Hotel will complete the formalities .Heritage fee is Rs.200/- each for adult & Rs.100/ for each child (between 12yrs -18yrs.) ( New rule has been implemented by the Lakshadweep Govt.).

“Amazing Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2011

Beautiful beaches and great water. Lots of fish. Great holiday spot. Very quiet. Not very touristy at all so don't come expecting a resort style approach. Had a great time, would recommend staying at a homestay as it's much cheaper than the resorts and are clean and staff friendly.

“Serene Beauty at its Natural Best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2011

Lakshadweep- group of 36 islands is a Union Territory of India situated about 460km from Kochi, on the west coast of India. There are 10 inhabited Islands. Only six of the 36 Islands are accessible to tourists.

Inhabited Islands – Kavaratti (administrative capital), Kalpeni, Minicoy, Agatti, kadamat, Androth, Amini, Kiltan, Chetlat & Bitra
Tourist Islands – Agatti, Kadmat, Bangaram (this is a 100% tourist island, i.e. no local residents), Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy

Entry Permit – Tourists (Indian & Foreign) need to have an Entry Permit before arrival. The permit can be obtained from Kochi upon furnishing the confirmed accommodation details. Or it can be easily arranged by the resort/travel agent who is assisting you with the accommodation. The cost of the entry permit per person as charged by the agent can be Rs500-750 per person. There is also a heritage fee of Rs200 per person.

Connectivity - Agatti Island is the gateway to Lakshdweep. Agatti is the airport stopover from Kochi, Bengaluru & Calicut. The Island is about 8km long. The Islands gets wider from south to north and the widest part of the Island measures 1km from east to west coast. The total area of the Island is about 2.4 square kilometers. The airport is situated at the southern tip of the Island for 2.5km. One can also reach the Lakshadweep by ship that operates from Mangalore & Kochi.

Accommodation - The Agatti Island Resort (Government leased) and the Sea Shells Resorts are within walk-able (less than a kilometer) distance from the airport. Unfortunately both the resorts are closed right now due to some legal issues. However there are few home-stays available. The Island home-stay is the closest one to the sports activity centers in the south. Mr Sameer [--] & Mr Abdul Rahaman [--] can provide assistance with the bookings. Mr Shaafi [--] takes care of the guest at the home-stay.

Activities – Most of the sports activities happen at the southern part on the west coast, close to the resorts. There are 2 or 3 of sports centers that offer snorkeling, kayaking, diving, glass bottom boat ride, boat ride to other Island etc. One can also buy the diving equipments on rent. Mr. Sikhandar is one of the diving instructors [--]. He is qualified, patient & has got right temperament for his profession. We had a very good diving experience as beginners. Carry lots of sunscreen lotion!!

Language – Malayalam is widely spoken. You can find people speaking English or Hindi only in the south.

Things to do – Other than the sports activities, do not miss the sun set on the west coast. The sun rise can be best seen from the jetty on the east coast. Typical sun rise time is 6:30 to 6:45AM. Go cycling and cover the entire stretch of the Island.

Don’ts – The people on the south of the Island are more tourists friendly. As you go to the north you can feel the difference. It is important that the women are dressed with cloths covering maximum portion of the body. Shorts or skirts above knee level are seen as a bad thing, especially at the north side of the Island as it has most of the residents of the Island. Do not pick any corals or pluck any coconuts. It is a punishable offense. Sunbathing or swimming nude is also punishable offence.

Local Transportation – There are only 3 roads that run along the Island. The road in the middle of the Island known as Airport Road or Middle Road runs from the south to the north. There are 2 more roads along the east & west coast which start about 3.5km to the north of airport. There are 4 or 5 cross roads joining these 3 roads. One can hire an auto or taxi from the airport. The minimum charge for auto is Rs150 and taxi can vary from Rs300 to Rs500. One can also hire cycles for Rs50-60 per day rent. We found it very convenient to travel across the Island. It takes just about 1.30 hour to go from South to North of the Island.

Eating – There are no hotels/restaurants on the Island. One has to arrange the food from the resort or the home-stay. Non vegetarians will not have much problem since they have many options. Vegetarian need to specify their food preference at the time of booking since there is nothing grown on the Island except coconuts.

Shopping – There is nothing special you can buy from here, there are few small shops that sell grocery etc. There is a souvenir shop at the resort. Dry fish & tuna pickles can be bought and taken out of the Island.

Hospital & Police Station – There is only one hospital & police station. Both are located at the central part of the Island.

ATM/Bank – There is only one ATM near the hospital.

Our Experience – We had a very good 3 nights 4 days vacation. We could do almost everything including diving. We took the beginners’ introductory course. Mr Sikhandar was very helpful and patient. My wife does not know swimming but she had the best time diving. We did snorkeling first as Sikhandar suggested to gain the confidence. Later with the diving gears Sikhandar took us to a depth of 18feet from the shallow water. It was one of the best experiences we had. He also took many photos and videos with his waterproof camera. We also visited the near by Island, Kalpitti, which is located to the south of Agatti resort. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the Island by boat. It is a small uninhabited Island. We spent 2 hours there walking around the Island. The trip costs Rs750 per person. We could see many turtles swimming across the lagoon. Overall it is an unforgettable experience.

“Excellent place for cool vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2011

I went to agatti with my wife in February last year. We booked the package through sports - a government organisation for tourism is lakshadweep. They take care of everything including food site seeing and basic water sport. We stayed for aggatti for 1 day and kadamat for 4 days. In aggati they have home stay while in kadamat they have a proper resort. Beach in Kadamat is excelent on southern end. Resort is well maintained. Best part about the trip was deep see snorkeling in eary morning. You can watch sharks, eil (see snake, sting ray ...) while swiming

“crown jewel in the indian ocean”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2011

beautiful island in the ocean which appeared more charming with the monsoons in full force. uninterrupted expanse of blue as the ocean meets the sky at horizon leaves you spellbound indeed.
small island can be covered by foot or on a bicycle in a day. interaction with local populace is a very sweet memory to cherish - beautiful people really!!!

recommend off season visits for more peace and tranquility and of course easy on purse.
