A few minutes from the cliffs in a quiet spot. The cottages are quirky and keep cool in the heat. Nice to sit on the balcony and hang out. But overall I felt the place was a bit run down and lifeless though and repairs needed to the cottages so good to know they’re starting renovations. Dilip and the staff were really nice and helpful but the food service was rather hapless. Great breakfast.

Dear Glyn,
Thank you for your review. We have already initiated the renovation of a few facilities at the resort and are adding a chemical free swimming pool as well. These should be complete by end of April 2018. We hope to welcome you back to our humble resort soon.
Warm Regards.

I love to seek out and visit places "less travelled". Varkala Beach is an amazing work of nature with a cliff overlooking the beach. The view is breathtaking from the cliff, not to speak of the beautiful beach itself. And Bohemian Masala is a little gem I found a short distance from the beach. The place has a quaint rustic feel, with huts nestled amongst lush greenery. It is a pleasant feeling to wake up in this setting, especially coming from a city like Mumbai.
The resort is right on the road, which leads further down to the beach. There is a little pathway behind the resort, which takes you to the cliff.
The hut (a little cottage really) I stayed in had a spacious bedroom with a mosquito net, and functional wood furniture. The ceiling decorated with colourful fabric is a nice a touch. There is AC in the room. Bathroom was perfectly clean and adequate.
I found the calm and peace and the simplicity of the place rather charming.
And I spotted a peacock too, seems to be a resident of the place.
Breakfast had coffee, toast, eggs, fruits, juice etc. which worked perfectly for me. There was also idli/dosa as an option. For lunch and dinner, you can request traditional Indian food (dal, veggies, rice, chapati) or a typical Kerala style thali with chicken or fish.
All in all, it is a great affordable place to stay if you want to experience Varkala beach. The staff is super courteous and helpful.

As an experienced traveler in India, I find it unusual to find a place where you can really relax and hide away from the world for a bit. Bohemain Masala is such a place. After coming back to Varkala every year since four years, I have spent in total almost six months in this peaceful beach resort. In all this time I have not found a more enjoyable guest house. For me the Bohemain Masala has become like that song "Hotel California".. You can check out any time you like but you can never leave... This is why I keep coming back, time and time again. The one thing I always dreamt about was to meet with a peacock in India. Upon my return in February this year, I was so surprised and my heart rejoiced by seeing a peacook just passing by outside the veranda where I was doing my morning yoga. I could hardly believe my eyes. But here it was! And from that day on this little peacook became my neighboor.
In the evening time the peacook would come to whisper in my ears, a lovely song of mystery. And at some occasions I would wake up and in the morning, looking out from my window, I would see an owl sitting looking at me. What can be more spiritual than sleeping surrounded by owls and peacocks? I can think of no other place.
And peacocks in Varkala, believe me, they are rare. And as far as I know, it should still be there, in The Bohemian Masala.

Room tip: near to swimming pool is better, away from the cliff

I spend one month in Bohemian Masala while doing yoga course with Rishikul Yogshala school from 7/01/2018 to 04/02/2018 and I really enjoyed staying here.
The cottage was big and confortable with nice terrasse looking in the green beautiful garden. The room was nice with wardrobe, shelves and a desk. It was quiet, and dark at night (shutter and curtains) for a nice sleep. And the cottage keep temperate air so it was not too hot during the day.Even, there is only cold water in the bathroom, it was Ok, and there is 2 showers outside with hot shower if needed.

I totally love this place, it's just so cute. Dilip is a great host and sported out taxi's and laundry for me. The inclusive breakfast is fantastic, fresh juice, coffee, fruit, toast, eggs, and something different from a selection of Indian foods everyday - very filling. The cottages themselves are gorgeous with lovely little terrace overlooking the stunning garden, the rooms and beds are large, and come with a really good quality mosquito net (essential) - good shower in the bathroom. The location is quiet yet only 5 mins walk from the beach and the main drag. I loved my stay here and would highly recommend to anyone stopping in Varkala.
