“an excellent choice for accomodation in Varkala.”
Reviewed 19 February 2012

Just returned from a trip to India where we stayed a few nights in Varkala. We chose Kaiya House because of the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor; needless to say we weren't disapointed. Debra was as friendly and helpful as the reviews stated, as was her husband and staff. The rooms are beautifully furnished and so clean, as is the whole house. The Varkala cliff top/beach area is a hive of activity and I liked the fact that it was set away from all of this, allowing you to escape from the hustle and bustle but only being a few minutes walk away when you wanted to go there. I loved the rooftop of the house, where we could sit and the staff would bring us up a coffee when we wanted, or our breakfast. You can also do yoga here if you want or have some reflexology. We had our binoculars with us so liked to birdwatch from here. From the rooftop you can see many birds such as Bee-eaters, Kites, Orioles, Treepies, Parakeets, Sunbirds, Kingfishers, Drongos, etc. If I ever went back to Varkala I would definitely stay here again and would certainly recommend it to anyone doing an Indian trip for the first time. If you are opting to stay a few nights in Varkala at the start of your trip (being not far from both major airports) this is a safe, clean place to stay so that you can gently adjust to being in India. A wonderful place to stay.

Much has been written about Debra and her staff. And all of that is true. She's an amazing host.
The best part of staying at Kaiya House was the fact that you feel welcome from the second you set your foot in. To be guaranteed a cup of tea/coffee any time of the day is an added bonus. By the way Debra has some rules..No eating inside the rooms..wash feet when you come back from beach. It all adds to the charm of the home. And out of the three homestays we did in Kerala, this one was the only mosquito and insects proof!

This place is 1km away from the beach. Its a beautiful walk though. Varkala does have some resorts right on the cliff but i am not sure if they will match this experience.

This was a great place to stay we only stayed for 3 nights but felt at home from the moment we stepped inside. Debra was great, she was a perfect host so helpful. Make sure you go on her tour she has some great suggestions for places to eat. The cafe by the tank does great masala dosa's. The house is beautiful and very clean. The outside areas are big and spacious. The breakfast is delicious and her staff delightful. Great coffee too. We had an amazing time with Debra and hope to visit again. - Karl and Tracy UK

From the time we were met at the door by Debra to the moment she arranged the rickshaw for us to leave nothing was too much trouble.
On our arrival Debra immediately asked us if we were up to going off in a motor rickshaw to an elephant festival that was taking place in a nearby town, and needless to say made all the arrangements. When we returned she took us to show us where to eat and shop. LThe next morning after a wonderful breakfast she then took us for a walk to show us other places to see during our stay. The whole house was beautiful and we spent many happy hours talking with Debra. We cannot recommend the experience highly enough. If we return to Varkala we would rush to book a room at Kaiya House.
