If you want to meet fellow travelers and stay somewhere that is affordable with a great communal area then look no further.

The kitchen serves very nice affordable food and drink from morning to night. There are morning and afternoon yoga classes for just R300 a session. There is volleyball/badminton net, swings, hammocks, a barbell, a library and a tightrope to practice your balance.

The staff and owners are great as well. Thank you Shiva Garden, see you again soon!

Room Tip: Check the price of the treehouse - they have 2. When i stayed it was R400, which is only 100 rupees more than dorm.

Shiva Garden is a great spot for meeting unique individuals, relaxing and staying close to the beach (but not on the beach). I would recommend Shiva Garden to individuals looking for economy accommodations. Shiva Garden is nothing fancy by any standards but the hospitality and unique place makes this a great spot to meet alternative & eclectic travelers. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: There is wifi in the hallway and the commons area, front room did not have wifi.

Love the place. Friendly staff, great communal area in the centre of all rooms. People come and go everyday, so you never need to make plans, just join in. Budget rooms, family atmosphere and the owners kids (Divya and Nithya) add a great charm to the place. Best for single travellers and longer stays.

Rachel

Room Tip: the main building is old, the building behind are a bit newer.

We were a group of 8 enthusiastic people travelling together for New Year. We had booked our rooms at Shiva Garden two months in advance. Unfortunately, when we arrived, they had been attributed to other persons. Without any apology, and pretending that it was our fault because we arrived too late in the afternoon, the director sent us to a disgusting homestay for the night (we waited three hours outside with all our luggage). We had our rooms the day after. We are students and we are used to sleeping in basic accommodation but the rooms were really unclean and dark. The service was really poor: the staff was always trying to make us pay for things we didn't order for breakfast. The last day, we told the director that we would not pay for the rooms for the first night (because we slept elsewhere). He was aggressive and simply insulted us.
There are many guesthouses in Varkala. So don't worry, you will find a better one without any difficulty.
