The wooden chalet type accommodation was beautifully located and quite basic. Breakfast included turned out to be an arrangement with an on site restaurant with a price not exceeding 150 rupees. This was not explained. Anything above that was charged as an “extra”.
There were however other better much places to eat very close by. Also although we were assured on arrival card payments were ok, at the end cash was demanded and the machine was “out of order”.

Room tip: chalets with sea view are a lot more expensive

We stayed at the Blue Water Beach Resort for 4 nights and had the cottage closest to the water. While the accommodation was rustic the location and staff attentiveness compensated for lack of amenities. The hotel is located away from the busier section of Varkala and has a commanding view of the ocean. Also, it is possible to go swimming at the adjacent beach unlike other hotels perched high atop the cliffs. They had a makeshift tandoori oven and the food was very good so we had several meals here plus the breakfast which was included in our rate. Very quiet except for the crashing of waves (we did spend some time worrying about tsunamis).

Room tip: Ask for the cottage closest to the water. Great porch to contemplate and read on.

We stayed here for five nights at the beginning of our trip to South India The staff were excellent and very attentive however the accommodation was in poor repair and the cottage/bungalow was very dark and smelly. If the inside of the cottage was painted in a light colour it would have made such a difference. We had no hot water initially until we asked then suddenly we got some. The location is very good with excellent views of the sea. The menu was limited but the food was good.

This place commands a great view. The staff are brilliant, helpful, cheery and always smiling. The beer is cold as is the white wine. Food was very nice, loved the chilly chicken. Only downside was the inside of the bungalow was very dark and dingy, a coat of white paint would be good.

This is a beach front property which is very important when selecting your booking options. Lots of resorts will show you pictures of beach and some are even marked incorrectly on google maps as being on the beach. Hence ensure you have read some reviews about your choice in Varkala before you book your hotel.
This hotel is located on Odayam beach. One thing to note about the sea at Varkala, the beach is quite rough and chances of having a swim in it are remote. You may however choose to walk from the hotel towards the Varkala cliff where all the cafes and crowds are located. The road has a lot of steps and is uneven in places and you may need to wade a bit in ankle deep waters but its a good hike to the cliff side which offers stunning views of the sea below. You can also ask the hotel to organise transport for you to go to the cliff side, enjoy your evening and early night and then get dropped off at the hotel. The rooms are quite spacious and almost all of them have a good sea facing view especially the ones on the second floors. The room service is good too and they deliver food at most times of the day till about 10 pm when the kitchen closes. There is a lovely place to sit outside in a garden like area overlooking the sea from the cliff where you can have drinks till late into the night. For booking its best to contact the hotel directly for the cheapest prices and bargains are always open. Overall if you are looking to stay in a quiet place far from the throngs but right on the beach then this is a god option.

Room tip: Either get the bungalows on the garden nearest the beach or the second floor of the bigger units
