“Perfect Ayurveda Retreat - full marks except for dirty beach/pollution”
Reviewed 25 May 2012

Small, charming, homely and spotlessly clean hotel with excellent Ayurveda facilities.

Service: Friendly, personalised and sincere.

Price/Rates: Very affordable and great value for money – book a full board package ( this includes all medication, treatments, food and accommodation).

Location: 4 Km’s from touristy Kovalom – close to fishing village between the backwater (lake) and the beach. Quiet area - need to take a TukTuk or taxi to go anywhere.

Food/Restaurant: If you book a package you will eat strictly vegetarian/Ayurvedic food – no fish, eggs, cheese, chicken etc. No alcohol served on premises. The food was fresh but menu very limited. Unfortunately frequently items were not available which appeared on the menu and service was very slow. Room service available and included – very comfortable and nice to have! Outdoor dining very pleasant but weather permitting. Indoor dining room lacks atmosphere.

Facilities/Activities: Mainly Ayurvedic Treatments – +- 2 hours per day. Daily complimentary 1 hour yoga class in the mornings – excellent Yoga Master. Optional meditation/yoga classes at additional charge. Pleasant swimming pool next to the Ayurveda Center. Sightseeing trips available at additional charge. 2 hours backwater boat ride sometimes included – very nice bird life. Canoe available – but I would not recommend taking the chance to fall in the dirty water.

Rooms: Spacious, clean and comfortable – some with nice balconies and views. Best rooms in the main building – on the same side as the pool – 202 or 203 or 302 or 303. Avoid the room right next to the dining room.

Ayurveda: EXCELLENT! Personalised and clean Ayurveda Center with pleasant treatment rooms. Daily consultation with Doctor – insist on clarification if you have questions or are unsure what treatment programme entails – the Therapists speak very limited English. Therapists all highly qualified and skilled and very friendly and discreet. Although I was concerned about some procedures to follow I did not once feel uncomfortable. I also tried other Ayurveda Centers at other hotels for comparison, and found Beach and Lake’s Ayurveda the best.

What I liked most: Small hotel with personalised service and an authentic Ayurveda experience. I got to know every staff member, and they went out of their way to make me feel welcome and at home. Relaxed atmosphere with focus on wellness and Ayurveda - guests mostly in green gowns with oiled hair…perfect place for Ayurveda! The experience left me well rested and rejuvenated, and mentally, spiritually and physically enriched. I will definitely do an Ayuverda Retreat once a year.

What I liked least: This hotel has 2 disadvantages. Firstly we were warned that local fishermen may harass single women taking a walk on the beach. More concerning however is the VERY DIRTY beach, and the POLLUTED AND SMELLY lake – which are openly used by some as ablution facility. The location COULD be ideal if an attempt is made by the hotel staff to clean the areas around the hotel – but somehow it seems as if staff do not notice the rubbish. During my stay ( off season) the hotel was completely overstaffed with people standing and sitting around ( some sleeping) – and mostly staring at empty cans, bottles, paper, shoes, clothing etc. either drifting past or they would simply step on/ over it. Granted, the greater Trivandrum has a waste disposal/management problem, but surely paid and idle staff can make an attempt to clean in front of their own doors? If the immediate area can be cleaned it will make a HUGE difference – and maybe one can then venture a walk on the beach. While the area is so dirty one is completely stuck in the parameters of the building.

Special Tip: This hotel is perfect for solo travellers and those seeking an authentic Ayurveda experience. Staff and guests very friendly and relaxed and focus on Ayurveda – if your travel alone you will have nice company and feel at home. Stay at least 14 days and make sure you are prepared and informed about treatments to follow – this is not a SPA! If you want to visit the area for a couple of days and look for a base to explore beaches, cultural sites, bars and shops then this is not the place to go.

Would I return to this hotel: In a heartbeat – IF the surrounding beach and lake is cleaned – if not, I will go elsewhere. I visited other hotels in the area ( Sumatheeram and Maltheeram), and they do not have the dirty beach/lake problems.

Room Tip: Best rooms in the main building – on the same side as the pool – 202 or 203 or 302 or 303. Avoid the...

Idyllic. Excellent staff who were very attentive, always smiling. Food 'made to measure', plenty to choose from, all freshly prepared. Rooms, gardens, pool area all incredibly well maintained and immaculately kept. Do not go expecting to have noisy entertainment, a hotel to totally relax at and unwind. Do visit the nearby villages, fishing/fisher men activities, towns and city, which have so much history, culture and real life experiences. Be aware that the hotel complex is on 3 adjacent but separate sites, where the restaurant and beach are accessed by a 'punt' crossing quite a deep river, so it may not be fully suitable for those with young children or those with limited abilities. A wonderful time, thank you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the reception complex building if possible.

I spent two weeks in this resort in March 2012. Traveled first time to Kerala with the intention to spend two weeks on the beach and take ayrvedic treatment at the same time. When I woke up the next day after arrival and saw a breathtaking view of the nearby beach and a surrounding lake my first impulse was to run to the beach and soak in salty water. And then I realized that getting to the beach was more tricky than I thought. I am a sea person and love swimming, walking on the beach and just looking into the waves makes me peaceful and serene. And that is what hotel management writes in their leaflet " On the other side, a secluded expanse of beach, stretching 8 kms to the lively resort of Kovalam". What they forgot to mention is that to get to the beach you must first take a boat which takes you within 5 minutes to another side where the restaurant is located. You have to leave the resort area, open the gate that leads to an area with lots of rubbish, dilapidated buildings and local fishermen huts, go through a rugged terrain, cross a few yards, climb rocks and eventually reach the beach. Swimming is virtually impossible because of huge waves and almost on every occasion I was accompanied by groups of local teenagers who seem harmless, but do not leave you alone event for a second. The beach is separated from the resort by a stretch of lake waters you do not want to swim in. On the third day I decided to take a riksha and for 200 rupees one way I was taken to the Kovalam beach (10 minutes drive) for absolutely marvellous swimming and relaxation. To be fair, it is worth stressing that this resort offers a high quality ayurvedic treatment, masseurs are fantastic and professional, rooms are clean and service very good. However, the area within the resort is quite compact and you can either sit at the swimming pool, at your balcony, or cross the lake by a boat and sit in the restaurant. I definitely would recommend this resort for ayurvedic treatment, but not for those who love waking up and going barefoot to the beach for a morning swim.

Room Tip: Best rooms are in the main building (three floors). i would not take the rooms around the swimming p...

Just goin thru tripadvisor & reading bad reviews of this place is surprising !! For folks who r new in India , it can be a cultural change but if you go wid right attitude & bookings , its a cheap & very gud place to be in.M gonna list down wht u can expect frm dis resort

I come to this hotel every Season & it constantly astonishes me for so many years.Everytime there is a new progression , new personnel, some extras, new tourists but the Resort has continued to be the same.I normally book from Antilog Vacations which are a Kerala professional & provide a comperehensive program comprehensive of Car, Touring etc cheaper than wht resort offers.

Excellency

1) Hygiene is a belief.I bet its cleanser than most hotels in India.
2) Ayurvedic Spa is a high-class.The legitimate Oil, Fantastic Masseurs ,Relax treatments one of the best.
3) Fantastic & Inexpensive Meals begins 500 inr.Advisable to take an MAP strategy though rather than purchasing the same food at high costs.
4) very fast assistance. There are 20 odd rooms & no assistance issues.
5) Conventional Elegant is a little area behind reception, Take the best valued area fr ur room. Its cost is greater but best located for you to get a better sunlight & larger locations.
6) very varied and developing and a minimal overall look.Feel of Kerala lifestyle here.
7) Hot water Regularly & Bathrooms are a specialty here.Go Experience it.lemme not play the spoiler here
8) An outstanding Share . Awesome External & a good cleaning. They r experienced with British , europeans & it’s a unusual factor in Indian seeing housekeepers discussing european cultures.
9) Ask fr Kerala Veg food, its delicious nd prepared in coco oil
10) You never need any AC here

Disappointing

1) The Seaside outside is not good for swimming.Polluted and swarmed.
2) Beinga Seaside residence anticipate few bugs & Animals despite all care

Suggestions

1) Always book through a Kerala travel agent. They give u reductions & have marketing with Resort people so u get better locations.I discovered Antilog Holidays solutions perfect. They r cheap, honest & gud.

2) Take a complete 29 day Ayurveda therapy. If u cant manage that, be here fr at least 6-7 times. It is recommended to publication a Cab 24/7.Never take the taxi frm residents, they r expensive nd not reliable.Book everything in progress.

The best Ayurveda Resort of Kerala,in my opinion

Room Tip: As i said rooms which are in good areas facing sun are very good

We were happy to have a car to take us to the hidden "resort", but that was the end of our anticipated great experience. The room we were shown to was no bigger than a closet, the bed stuck in the corner, a tiny window at shoulder level with a "view" to a high wall, no sitting area, no bath tub. It could certainly not be called a deluxe room! The water nearby was indeed smelly. We retuned to reception to ask for another room, even if we had to pay a bit more. They claimed that this was the room we had booked. Finally we were able to arrange a wonderful hotel nearby, through a very helpful booking agent in London. We were very happy to get out of that strange place.
