A nice, basic getaway located about 20kms from Thekkady (Periyar National Park). A quiet drive through green tea estates gets one to the resort located in the valley on the banks of the Periyar (?) river. Lovely walks down to the river, which has a quaint bridge across it accessing views both up and down-stream; treks down the quiet road and across the countryside make a nice change from the hectic hustle, bustle and chaos of a city.

The service was a disappointment- having ordered a Kerala dinner (well in advance- by email and in the morning while confirming our booking)- we were served a basic, unpalatable vegetable curry, and were told that it was not possible to arrange ingredients for anything else since the place is so remotely located.

Perhaps a more efficient, welcoming service, and greater attention to details would make the well-designed cottages more comfortable and liveable. The cheap plastic accessories in the bathrooms certainly need to be replaced with more presentable essentials, and hooks added on the door or wall on which to hang clothes an towels etc .

Communication was also a bit of a problem- its more of a getaway for locals, I guess. Our taxi driver helped us bridge the language barrier.

We wanted to spent a weekend in Thekkady, as usual most of the hotels are full or overcharging, then one of our friend working with ICICI referred Harithavanam, it just 13 to 14kms from Thekkady in Vandiperiyar. This is no frill place and looks like a typical farmers property in this part of the world. Located in the banks of Periyar river, it got almost all the seasonal spices, fruits and vegetables famous in the region are available on the property itself. Even the drive from Vandiperiyar to the resort through the tea garden itself is a nice experience.

Food was one of the best things in Harithavanam, prepared by ‘achayan’ and ‘ammichi’(our cooks), one of the best I had recently. Everything they prepared was so tastee. Beef stew was the best thing. And they had a very very special item in the menu. ‘pazham kanji’, I ordered the same for my second day breakfast – pazham kanji normally served in the morning in kerala- it prepared by socking the last night’s boiled rice in curd and mixer of ginger and small onions and ‘Kanthai’(small kerala chillies)- prepare this mixer in night and you have it for your breakfast- I tell you there in nothing like it, its heaven- best hangover food in the world.

We went to thekkady and had boating in the morning and came back to resort for the achayan’s kerala lunch chicken and fish curry. After noon we went for the river trekking and fishing, we were not very sure about it but it turns out to be the best experience in our recent travels. Resort arranged for a fisher man, we walked through the river, jumping from one rock to another, some time through the water, as it is not deep in most of the part, we got couple of KGs of various fish, we came back for tea and the snack specialty was tapioca and chilly chutney and achayan fired some of the fish from our catch itself immediately served to us. For the dinner achayan prepared Rabit masala – sad/good thing is that we can choose the rabit from the farm itself.

We had memorable weekend and a different one, we enjoyed the river trekking and fishing and the food, more than the thekkady boat ride. We were bit apprehensive initially as this resort is situated remotely, only a small home near this resort(blessing in disguise – other than our noise there in no sound from anywhere) , no great views from the resort, but had the river in the back yard, we had a bath in the river as if it is a private property. Accessibility – 4 kms from the main road (KK road) from vandiperiyar, tarred road though the tea garden to the resort made the travel hassle free.

Room Tip: There are only few rooms, 4 or 5 I think cottages are the best for privacy

An ideal weekend getaway, getting there (driving down) is in itself a pleasure. The fresh whiff of nature and sights of greenery around welcomes you to this beautiful resort in the woods. It's a private place, perfect to get together with your close buddies, family friends or just family. You get a first hand experience of a farmer, with fruit plantations and vegetable farming that is as fresh and organic as it can get. The food is excellent - traditional Kerala cuisine that you can never have enough of! By the river side, the fishing and river trekking experience was fantastic. The special campfire, where the fresh fish caught was cooked the tribal way, is something that I would cherish a lifetime. Highly recommended...If you're going to Thekkady, Kerala, don't forget to stay a day or 2 at the Harithavanam Farmer Resort!!
