“Perfect end to our holiday!”
Reviewed 4 June 2012

We drove to Annavilasam from Kovalam and it was one of the most beautiful drives ever. The roads were empty as there was a state wide "bandh" and hence an otherwise long journey was made in good time. We had booked the pool villa since it was highly recommended on trip advisor and were not disappointed! So beautiful and charming! The experience of staying in a room with a private pool overlooking acres of plantations and hills was amazing though it was chilly so we couldn't actually get in the pool! Pirrko and the rest of the staff were extremely hospitable and helpful! Had a great stay!!

Aanavilasam is an odd mixture of excellence and irritating problems.

It's a beautiful place, set in a cardamom plantation. The interior design is very attractive with really special details such as the tree growing through the open shower, hammock in the trees, room water and homemade breakfast preserves in environmentally friendly glass or ceramic containers, coffee grown on the plantation...

Pirrko is indeed a charming host, greeting guests personally and tailoring activities to suit including a fascinating tour of the plantation provided by the estate manager. We enjoyed the communal dining arrangements and met some lovely people at each meal. It seemed that the employees were really treated like colleagues and it was the place where our driver seemed best cared for - he suffered a sad family event during our stay and Pirrko helped arrange for a relief driver to collect us so he could go home. Can't imagine the manager of the Taj doing that!

However there were a few frustrations. Incredibly complex light switch arrangements are endemic in Keralan hotels but Aanavilasam outdid them all. Pirrko was unable to provide an iron or ironing board and laundry had to be sent to the village and took a couple of days to come back - it was the most expensive laundry of our stay due to transportation costs. There is no clear service tariff and little extras offered can add up considerably. It's a pretty long drive from Thekkady.

Yet more important for us was an unagreed change made to our accommodation, which caused a fair bit of inconvenience. I was travelling with my venerable father and he had specifically booked the two suites in the main house in order that I could be close to him as he sometimes needs some help.

When we arrived, Pirrko "offered" for one of us to be "upgraded" to a pool villa. This actually suited us less well, so we said "no" - but it emerged that we had no choice in the matter as other guests were already installed in one of the suites we had booked.

The Pool Villas are probably lovely for a honeymooning couple but I was actually quite afraid alone up there on the first night, not certain how secure the open-to-sky bathroom was (later I found out that the noise that sounded like a man grunting outside was actually automatic air freshener above the loo) the water in the pool was too cold to be pleasant and the charming little swing bridge began to lose its charm after the umpteenth crossing on errands between my villa and Dad's down in the main house. So really it was not suitable for us and we did feel that our original request, made many months previously, should have been honoured.

So overall a mixed experience. If I were fortunate enough to visit Thekkady again I would probably chose somewhere a little simpler and closer to the Park.

Excellent is what describes a stay at this place. I stayed only 1 day & I am still regretting it that it was so short. This place is simply superb. It is a luxury homestay & it is 5/5 in all departments. The manager Pirkko is fantastic & she with her team ensures the best comfort for the guest. Food is lip smacking & you can order if you want to have something off menu. There are only 4 rooms so it is quite peaceful. The rooms are spacious, large & elegantly furnished. This is also a good place for couples & I would recommend the pool suite. This is not a resort for activities but a resort for total relaxation & doing nothing. Got a chance to meet with the resort owner Mr. Salem & he was warm in his conversation. I highly recommend a stay at this resort if you are in or near Thekkady. Would like to come back for a longer stay.

Room Tip: All rooms are elegantly furnished but the Pool rooms have a view.

One of the highlights of our stay in Kerala was the three nights we stayed in this wonderful place. Our suite was stunning with an attention to detail missing in many top hotels. Nothing quite like starting your day under Aanavilasam's open shower.

Best of all are the people that make this place special, Pirkko is charming , efficient and nothing appeared to be too much bother for her and the rest of the small staff. Too many highlights to share but I did enjoy an evening in the kitchen with Chef (sorry can't remember this lovely man's name) who introduced me to some of the secrets of Keralan cuisine.

We are still enjoying recipes from the Aanavilasam using spices picked up at nearby Thekkady.

Room Tip: Take a walk around the beautiful plantation with one of the staff.
