Kalaketty Estate Homestay
Reviewed 27 February 2017

We spent two nights with the owners of this idyllic paradise set in a rubber plantation in Kerala. Our hosts were perfect in their hospitality and friendliness. We were treated to wonderful food throughout served and cooked by their chef of 35 years. An abundance of Keralan dishes which excited the pallette and tingled the taste buds.
All meals were taken with the host who was very gracious and interested in sharing his love of the agriculture his plantation grew.
The accommodation was huge with a large bedroom, a verandah and a bathroom with shower, all regularly serviced and kept spotlessly clean. The building itself was an old converted building and all the meals were taken in the hosts own plantation house.
We were shown around the estate, experiencing rubber tapping, pineapple growing and honey being produced, amongst many other real life, non touristy unusual things.
Thank you Kurian and Anuja for this wonderful time with you both.

Room Tip: This is a homestay in real India, which dates back 4 generations, sheer bliss!

This was truly a homestay. We ate with our host and had great conversation about Indian culture, agriculture and politics. Both very enjoyable and instructive. Our hostess, while not eating with us - this seems to be cultural - joined us for coffee and conversation after the meals. I have to say that they were both friendly, intelligent and charming and made us feel totally at home. The food was delicious, even though the chef was away on our first night - our hostess was clearly a good cook in her own right.
There are only two rooms and no a/c. However, with efficient fans this wasn't a problem. The rooms are vast and comfortable with sitting and sleeping areas, and a separate, enormous shower room and toilet . The building is an old restored part of the original house and has been done with great care. The bed was huge and comfortable.
We were taken on a guided tour of the plantation and, although we had done this before at other properties, it shouldn't be missed. We learned so much more about the growing of the various crops and about the economics and local politics of Keralan agriculture. We ate honey direct from the hive - and delicious it was - and visited our host's mother's house. The latter is a very large - 40 rooms - and beautiful old house which was architect designed and featured what, at the time, was cutting edge design and materials. Incredibly interesting.
It was a pity we could only stay 2 nights here on our tour.
However, I would thoroughly recommend a stay here. You will make new friends here, as we did.

Room Tip: The ground floor room is cooler at night.

After nearly three weeks of staying in Keralan homestays we finally felt as if we had a real homestay experience.
You couldn't have asked for more hospitable or charming hosts where, from the moment of our arrival, we were made to feel like honoured guests.
The house itself lies in the middle of the family's rubber plantation and is a grand, turn of the century dwelling filled with family portraits and photographs.
The room was vast and although not airconditioned was kept cool by fans and an abundance of windows that captured the breeze.
A very comfortable bed, hot water and tea making facilities. ....not always available in other homestays.
But what made this stay especially wonderful was the amazing food delivered by the beautiful and gracious Anjua together with charming company of Kurian.
It was my birthday during our stay and Anjua had baked me a lovely cake! !!
This really is a very special place. Thank you!

We stayed two nights at Kalketty Homestay set in the midst of an extensive rubber plantation with Kurian and Anuja, who were such very charming, informative and hospitable hosts. We had a wonderful bedroom which was superb, large and most comfortable in a separate building to the main house in which we ate our quite delicious home cooked Keralan food, the ingredients of which were carefully explained to us. Kurian took the time to take us round part of the plantation and instruct us on the finer details of rubber production. Later we visited a local bee keeper and his family and even tasted some of the very new honey. On the previous day Kurian had taken us to see a most unusual Benedictine monastery and school. We loved it all and would most highly recommend anyone who is interested in learning more about the culture, cuisine and countryside of Kerala to stay at least two nights at Kalketty. Thank you, Kurian and Anuja for your generosity and kindness. We would love to return.

Nothing can quite describe how totally perfect was our 3 night stay with Kuriam and Anuja. Our food was delicious, I think Anuja was on a quest to get us to experience every Keralan dish she had ever had. The plantation tour and the latex weighing area was most interesting. We had booked a days cycle tour, very worthwhile, and Kuriam joined us on his bike up to the bee keeper. My husband caused quite a stir with the local school kids when he asked where the Barber was, they all came to see if he was serious. Our room was huge, comfortable and very relaxing. We even had a swim down in the river after Kuriam said it was ok. It would be lovely to visit again.

Room Tip: Only two available, both fabulous.
