This was truly a homestay. We ate with our host and had great conversation about Indian culture, agriculture and politics. Both very enjoyable and instructive. Our hostess, while not eating with us - this seems to be cultural - joined us for coffee and conversation after the meals. I have to say that they were both friendly, intelligent and charming and made us feel totally at home. The food was delicious, even though the chef was away on our first night - our hostess was clearly a good cook in her own right.
There are only two rooms and no a/c. However, with efficient fans this wasn't a problem. The rooms are vast and comfortable with sitting and sleeping areas, and a separate, enormous shower room and toilet . The building is an old restored part of the original house and has been done with great care. The bed was huge and comfortable.
We were taken on a guided tour of the plantation and, although we had done this before at other properties, it shouldn't be missed. We learned so much more about the growing of the various crops and about the economics and local politics of Keralan agriculture. We ate honey direct from the hive - and delicious it was - and visited our host's mother's house. The latter is a very large - 40 rooms - and beautiful old house which was architect designed and featured what, at the time, was cutting edge design and materials. Incredibly interesting.
It was a pity we could only stay 2 nights here on our tour.
However, I would thoroughly recommend a stay here. You will make new friends here, as we did.
