Recommendation: Highly Recommend
Athreya is an authentic Ayurveda place, run by a family of sincere and qualified Ayurveda practitioners, and is focused towards the sole aim of delivering results to its patients. This is achieved through personalized daily consultation with doctors, trained and diligent staff, a nice clean accommodation set in a quiet location next to a rice field and good food that supports treatment.
• Pre-Treatment Preparation: I chose this place amongst other highly rated options on Trip Advisor, because they brought a refreshing result oriented customer centric approach (vs a sale oriented approach) of trying to ascertain why I was making this trip with honest feedback of what could actually be achieved from such a visit. I was made to read detailed articles on what to expect from my stay, fill up a detailed questionnaire, which helped me crystallize the intended purpose of the retreat and was followed up with a telephonic discussion with the Dr Sreejit where he set expectations right, being brutally honest in his assessment of what can be achieved and what not. This differentiates this place from other places, where I found the discussion was more logistic and sales centric (such as what room to stay, price etc).
• Dr Sreejit (Doc): He is the Rock Star of Athreya. I would recommend this place only for him. He is sincere and in complete integrity to spirit of Ayurveda. He pilots the treatment and takes...Recommendation: Highly Recommend

• Dr Sreejit (Doc): He is the Rock Star of Athreya. I would recommend this place only for him. He is sincere and in complete integrity to spirit of Ayurveda. He pilots the treatment and takes ownership of the patient. He is intuitive, thorough in his medical assessment and prescription of treatment, works tirelessly and is responsive to a patient feedback on progress/ changes in treatment etc.
• Daily Consultation with the Doctors: Doc and his wife, Dr Jaylakshmi, daily see the patients, alternating between themselves. This daily consultation means that progress is monitored on a daily basis and changes etc can be made if required.
• Daily Staff Feedback: Treatment and Maintenance staff is kept on their toes by a daily assessment sheet to be filled by each patient, where any slippages (e.g. punctuality, quality of treatment, cleanliness) can be reported. These are daily monitored by both the doctors. Dr Jayalakshmi, takes the lead on this front, and is very hands on, taking feedback seriously and constructively, and acting promptly, to make the patients treatment and stay as comfortable as possible.
• Treatment: Doc defines the treatment on the onset of the stay, after a detailed one on one consultation. Both docs rigorously follow up progress on a daily basis and makes changes as appropriate. Most medicines served are prepared in their own pharmacies. There are daily Yoga classes (twice a day) lead by a very good instructor, who follows Sivananda yoga style.
• Staff: Treatment Staff is well trained, effective, dedicated and works tirelessly to carry out the treatments as per Doctor’s instructions. While I did not venture out of premises during my 3 week stay, some of my fellow participants made field trips to back waters etc and the staff were flexible enough to alter treatment timings accordingly.
• Accommodation: While rooms are basic, they are neat and clean, airy with windows shielded with mosquito nets, air conditioned. Cleaning is done every day and bed sheets and towels changed every second day.
There are two blocks of accommodation, one closer to treatment rooms and the other, a 5-minute walk, set amidst a beautiful rice field, with blooming lotuses.
If you are a nature lover and prefer a silence zone, I would recommend staying in the latter, with fresh breeze through the day and beautiful view of the rice field.
If you would like to be closer to treatment rooms and the dining area, chose the former. Rooms here are fancier, nice wood work and TV. However, since its in the main compound closer to the treatment rooms, it has more activity around it.
Wifi is perfect with each room having an individual router.
• Food: The treatment is supported with nice, light, yummy home cooked food served by the kitchen in the open-air dining area.
• Resort: This is more a medical oriented Ayurveda focussed place. So one should not expect it to have a luxury resort feel. Ideally, it would be great if at some point in the future, they create a nice steam room, a sauna and hot jacuzzi. That would make this place perfect.
• Healer: One added attraction is a Pranic Healer in neighborhood Kottayam (30 min tuk tuk ride one way), She is amazing, authentic and quite effective. The healing I received from her supported my treatment and I would strongly recommend a trip to her. Astrologer- avoidable!
• Post Treatment Follow Up: I have been in periodic touch with Doc post my treatment and updated him on my progress, including post treatment medicine consultation.
Final Comments: Give yourself 21 days (or minimum 14 days) at Athreya, give your 100% to the treatment, and let Doc and his team do the rest. I am certain, you will be glad you took this Ayurveda break at Athreya.More
