We stayed in Jos' wonderful cottage at the edge of the lake, although 'cottage' doesn't really do it justice as a description...it's huge! It's furnished with wonderful antique furniture and a huge comfortable double bed. Every night you can sit out on any number of chairs and benches to watch the sun set across the water. Magical. A well stocked kitchen and wonderful outdoor bathing facilities top off this perfect place. Great breakfasts in the main house, and evening meals if you give Jos notice. Up on the main road, a 5 minute walk, there are various restaurants and cafes at prices to suit all pockets. A lovely area to walk around too, with lots of lovely friendly locals. we didn't see any other tourists the whole 4 days we were there! Highly recommended.
The cottage has other beds in too and can sleep up to about 6, I think.

Room Tip: There are some rooms in Jos' house but the cottage has the best position and is very private.

On a recommendation from a friend in the UK we asked Jos to organise our Kerala experience. We gave him a list of the things we wanted to do and our budget. From the moment of our arrival in Cochi and our first time in India we felt looked after. Coping with the heat and the sensory overload was intense for the first few days and Gramam homestay was the perfect place to get our heads together. We got quite stressed as we could not get any money out of the ATMs for 2 days. This was because despite telling our banks we were in India they still blocked the cards until we contacted them again. Also the ATMs work differently - put card in but pull it out again after 2 seconds before you proceed. Do not leave it in for the whole transaction. Recommend that you get money from money exchange in airport to prevent this immediate anxiety. Jos was so very nice and even offered to lend us some rupees! He provided a safety net for our first few days. All the arrangements for our onward trip went incredibly smoothly. Once we left his care he helped us navigate Indian websites to book overnight trains etc. Warning if you booked train tickets from home - check that if says CNF (confirmed) the tickets we were proudly holding said WL (waiting list) and after 3 months we had only progressed a few places so we had no guarantee of getting our train but Jos found a way! Angel.
We booked yoga sessions at Gramam with the lovely Hayzl who arrived on her Vespa at 06.30 and attempted to turn me into a pretzel on the veranda overlooking the lake. Idyllic setting.

So happy to have met Jos and his family. Fabulous home cooking too.

Thank you

My husband and I just returned from a month's stay at Gramam Homestay in Kumbalangi Village about 8 km south of Fort Cochin. By renting the stand-alone cottage, we enjoyed an expansive view across the backwater and total privacy. There's no AC in the cottage, but breezes off the backwater (during the day) and fans (at night) kept us comfortable. (There is AC in rooms in the main house.) Hosts, Jos and Lyma, were gracious and accommodating. Lyma's breakfasts were delicious. She prepared equally tasty dinners for us with advance notice and patiently answered all my culinary questions. The solar-powered hot water was reliable. Wifi was strong and generally reliable, but occasionally it cut out because of power outages across the entire neighborhood. These interruptions were always short.

Our lengthy stay allowed us to become familiar with our surroundings. We went to a few local festivals (Catholic and Hindu), an early-morning fish auction, and toured a nearby elementary school. The villagers are incredibly friendly. The waiters at a nearby restaurant/bar remembered our drink orders. Jos also arranged a driver and accommodations to/from Munnar (hill station).

This is a place to unwind and absorb the vibe of southern India. We would return in a heart beat.

We enjoyed our stay at Gramam and Jos and his wife are welcoming hosts. We had one meal at the home stay and the food was wonderful. Jos is a great organiser and had organised our whole week in Kerala which was just as we had hoped for.
The rooms and the beds are comfortable and the A/C efficient (a godsend in the humidity of this area). We were in the main house but we heard the cottage was even better.

Situated just a few kilometres south of Kochi, Gramam Homestay is an amazing location to explore Kerala - or just to enjoy in itself.

Set in walled grounds, with private jetty and access to the backwaters, Gramam Homestay is planted with mature coconut and mango trees - along with cinnamon bushes and pepper vines. The house and grounds are a delight. Interior decoration is simple and rooms are spotless.

The host, Jos, helped us to plan everything we wanted to do in the area, including: a visit to the local riverside fish auction, fishing from a canoe on the backwaters, and experiencing a kathakali performance. I would recommend all three.

We often are dinner - at the homestay which was made with delicious local ingredients including fresh fish and prawns from the backwaters.

Nothing was too much trouble for Jos and his family during our stay - and we were made to feel very welcome.

A special and unforgettable stay.
