“Santa Cruz Basilica, Kochi”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

I was a little disappointed with this. When I thought of Santa Cruz "Basilica" I was expecting something which resembled Westminster Cathedral or St Paul's London inside. The photos of the exterior that I previously saw, looked promising.

Instead what you see inside is a modest sized church, very old looking and poorly maintained. The pews too looked decrepit and it was not a place that makes you feel like spending time in quiet prayer.

The murals on the wall have to be re-touched. Everything looked like a hotch potch of once bright colours that have now faded.

Amazingly you ought to take your shoes off to enter the main prayer hall.

“Old is really gold”
Reviewed 14 April 2012

just perfect place to sit and get near to god. we were there for nearly 1 hour but still we felt to just sit there and feel the church from bottom of our hearts. We did really enjoyed it but still there was some place which was untidy and makes the surrounding little messy. The church was in need of maintainance at some place after which it will be really wonderfull place.

“Beautifuly old, badly maintained”
Reviewed 10 April 2012

Though it is the seat of the Kochi Bishop, and is a really imposing edifice, the church is woefuly badly maintained. The roof (which has some really beautiful murals) is leaky and stained, the walls have n number of nails left sticking from previous decorating for festivals or marriages and the like, the old wooden benches and beautifuly carved wooden pulpit, and statue cases are all falling apart and in bad repair. But if you close your eyes to all that, its a really beautiful place and well worth a visit. Try to avoid going on a Sunday because most of the morning and evening the prayer services will be going on and you cannot move around easily.
