We were travelling through Cochin for just the day on New Year's Eve. We were looking to take a room somewhere so that we could shower before our midnight train ride to goa. Every hotel we went to was fully booked and turned us away. When we arrived at Fort House it too was fully booked but the lovely lady (Auria) who appeared to be managing the place overheard our conversation with the reception. She came over and offered us to use the shower facilities in the office at the hotel and we were even given fresh towels - she could see we were all scruffy and needed a good scrubbing up. For this she asked nothing in return which we could hardly believe.

After getting all cleaned up we asked if there was a restaurant at the hotel so we could fill our bellies. Without any expectations we were directed to the most romantic little jetty at the back of the hotel facing onto the backwaters. On the jetty were set up a number of beautiful candle-lit dining tables with views across the bay.

We ordered a number of roast meat dishes (having been in predominantly vegetarian kerala for a week this was a very exciting prospect). I have travelled in India a great number of times and I am always weary of "western" food having a distinctively indian flavour when finally served (read: masala spicy). This was not the case here. The food was superb and suited a western palate perfectly. This was a super treat after a long week of eating dosas and idlis. The food here was comparable to the best restaurants we ate at in india including Indigo in Mumbai and La Plage in Goa. Top stuff.

We chanced upon this place and were shown great hospitality. After this experience I wish we had stayed in Cochin the night and would have stayed at this hotel 100%. If I ever go back this is the place I will stay.

In terms of a hotel, our stay was very comfortable. Rooms were spacious and clean and the facilities are acceptable for the price we paid. The breakfast was excellent and the cleaning and kitchen staff were polite.

However, I was extremely disappointed in the front desk staff who consistently accused me and my family of not paying for trips and taxis that we had arranged through the hotel. In most cases we obtained a receipt and could clearly prove that payment had been made. However, on one occasion we did not have a copy of the receipt and were forced to pay twice. Granted I should have been more careful in getting a receipt but there are definitely some communication problems with staff at the hotel.

My advice would be to either get a receipt for everything you pay for or better still, go outside of the hotel and arrange cheaper travel and trips from local companies.

We found the Fort Hotel a good place to stay, not only for its good and quiet location but also for
its moderate prices. The room was simple and not very spacious but clean and in order.
We unfortunately had no chance to test the restaurant for dinner - we waited a long time without being attended. So we walked away. In the morning again, serving of the breakfast was slow and the personnel was neither friendly nor in a hurry to serve us - quite a contrast to the staff at the reception which cared tremendously.

loved the interior courtyard leading to a very nice restauraunt on their own pier overlooking the harbour.Clean spacious rooms and tranquil setting. restaurant food was good although service slow, again relaxing. Located across the street from the arts centre for dance.

Room Tip: eastern wing is newer but all seem fine

The Fort House was recommended to us by friends but had no vacancies for the first two nights - so we stayed in a pricey villa, comfortable but rather impersonal. Spending the rest of our week at the Fort House was a wonderful experience: we loved the peaceful, welcoming atmosphere and the charming garden. The location on the waterside is great. We stayed on the right wing, in a spacious room, had no problem with noise. Breakfast was excellent, so was the Ayurveda treatment ! And we were most impressed with the friendly and helpful staff and also the perfect planning of our tours to the Backwaters and Munnar. We can highly recommend Fort House Hotel and would love to return...! Barbara + Birgit
