“In heaven overlooking the back waters”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2012

What a beautiful property, not too many rooms but fantastic views and an excellent service throughout. Located on the waterfront, the view from the room was amazing. The top floor suite has a large open veranda, a well appointed bedroom with an amazing bathroom and a sitting room to relax. There are also suites in the Old wing which are very pleasant as you are at tree level but the view is not so good.
Do not miss a meal at the Rice Boat which serves authentic Kerala seafood. A real pleasure to taste the food prepared by Chef Rasheed. He has researched the spices of Kerala for years and come up with the most delicious meal. We were fortunate to meet him.
Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Top suites on 6th and 7th floor of the new wing

Taj Malabar , now Vivanta is a beautiful property. Set right at the edge of Wellington Island, it gives a panoramic view of the lagoon opening out to the sea and spending the afternoon there, watching the ships go by is worth the visit itself (and the price, I dare say). The property is also large, with an excellent infinity pool and spa. There is a heritage wing and a "new wing". Both are nice, and I would unhesitatingly recommend a room in either as long as it faces the sea.

Fort Cochin, where most of the historical sites are located, is just a boat ride away. Taj organises for trips if you want, but using the local water transport department boats (the jetty is just a short walk away) is way more charming an experience. The boats are clean, safe, delightfully noisy and its always interesting to ride with the locals along with their wares, bicycle et al.

The only caution I would recommend in the property is to stick to the "new wing" if you have special needs, have limited mobility or are travelling with toddlers on prams. The elevators dont reach the old wing and you have to walk across "levels" through 3-4 step staircases.

In all, a good, if somewhat expensive, experience.

Room Tip: Choose the new wing if you have special needs, have limited mobility or are travelling with toddlers...

If you can afford it in your trip to Kerala, go for it. Anytime I come to Cochin for business or leisure, I try to book at the Vivanta Taj Malabar. Not easy to reach but once there, you will feel the old clonial british atmosphere which is very present. Quality hotel, good rooms (ask for sea view), nice pool and excellent breakfast. On week end you can enjoy local danse show. Believe me, no hesitation, the best in Cochin/Kochi.
Room 410 (or any other corner room) is a good choice. Don't get a room in the old aisle.

We stayed here for 3 nights & had a wonderful experience.... the staff is very hospitable & courteous.... the open grill restuarant over looking the river side is quite nice..... u get grilled sea food & chicken in choice of your sauce & a huge spread of desserts as well.... there is one thai resturant as well apart from all day dining option........

The rooms are not too huge, but decent for its price...... the swimming pool is not too big, but nice as it over looks the river........

I also had an experience in the JIVA Spa & its an amazing, must do experience..... worth its money.......

Overall, had good 3 days & warm staff to take care......
