David, the owner, is friendly, charming and helpful. Because of transportation problems we asked to cancel a second night and he let us without a problem. The entire staff is friendly and helpful. When we asked about laundry, the washing began in 5 minutes. Rooms are nicely furnished. We were given a choice of a larger room for 300 rupees more, but saw no reason to move. It is a small place with less than 10 rooms enclosed by a wall and has a nicely tended courtyard. The typical guests were friendly, older European couples who have some experience of India who were looking for a good, reasonably priced hotel who had useful information to share. It is in a good location convenient to both higher priced and reasonably priced restaurants and fronts the parade ground which makes it quieter at night and interesting by day because kids are playing cricket, soccer, or field hockey. The Roti Dal restaurant about 2 blocks away has good, reasonably priced dal and other homecooking. The owner of Roti Dal is a gem who explains the differences between South and North Indian food and their prejudices about food. Vasco's restaurant in the next block towards the Chinese Fishing Nets is a good choice for coffee, chai, appam or other Keralan staples. In the morning walk to the Chinese Fishing nets 5 minutes away for chai and to observe the fish market auction. There is a higher priced but good quality shop next door which has batiks and other unique items I did not see elsewhere. A nice Kathkali theater is a walk of 5 minutes or less.
