We stayed at the hotel from the 07th June, 2012 to 09th June,2012. The hospitable staff made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. We found the hotel lacking through ageing infrastructure that needs upgradation. The food was good if not excellent, but definately the best we tasted in Mangalore.
The staff was very attentive and took special care to make our stay welcome and relaxing. They never failed to pamper us with their ever available willingness to attend. A special mention here for Mrs. Hema, who through her care and hospitality, made our stay so relaxing and rememberable. The waiter Raj Kumar also needs to be applauded for his services.
Thanks everyone at The Gateway for taking good care.

I stayed here for two nights. The hotel is 20 years old and one can see it all around. The rooms are alright- bathroom is well maintained. Room has the usual cable TV, tea/coffee maker, large writing desk and a sofa for two. The keep the airconditioners set at 25 degree centigrade at night, so if you are looking for slightly cooler room than that, you will be disappointed. The view outside is either the road or the residential building at the back, so do not expect much from there.

The disappointment was the food - oily, over fried and lack of variety. I did not see much difference between the lunch and the dinner that were served over the two days.

The restaurant staff was either overworked or too few to meet the needs of the guests, specially at breakfast. The service is so bad that the table takes 15 minutes and several reminders to be cleared and re set between one guest and the other - while the next one is waiting. On top, they forget to give you the serviette, or the tea that you asked for, etc, etc
.
We were there on conference - the food was served on time, so was the tea and coffee. The conference hall had an old carpet which smelt and to cover that up, they would spray strong aerosol "room fresheners" which are more harmful for your health.

The hotel staff behaviour is very polite and helpful and it is the saving grace of that hotel. The location is slightly out of the city and more towards the port so you are not plonked in the middle of the city.

If you are here for business, it is a good place to stay.

Room Tip: Take a room on the swimming pool side if you want to avoid the noise from the road. the higher, the...

Nice, comfortable business hotel. Very helpful staff. Slight fish smell outside the hotel but otherwise had a comfortable stay.

I stayed at this hotel for one night in Feb 2012 for business. You get a warm welcome with your name written in chocolate on a dish in your room. The bathroom has a switch that raises the curtain dividing bedroom and bathing area which is covered by glass. Food quality is average, variety is less for price and service is rather slow. Beds are comfortable. Hotel is essentially quiet inside, but noisy for those who stay in rooms facing the street. The wooden decor gives soothing feeling, especially when one has stayed in artificial rooms with false ceilings. A/C is comfortable and LCD TV is large with clear picture and sound.

We stayed there for just one night in transit. MOst of the clientele appear to be, mainly Indian, business men and few Tourists. The outside is not attractive and there is a slight smell of fish in the air it is after all right near the old port . However inside the lobby are ais smart and the welcome is great as one would expect from a Taj property. The rooms are like business hotels the world over but comfortable nevertheless, the all day dining restaurant is bright and comfortable but the service seems a little disorganised. We ordered some snacks on arrival just as lunch ws finishing and had to wait a very long time. They then explained that the samosas we asked for are normally only served at tea time and so had to be made from scratch. It seems a bit odd to have something on an "all-day menu which isn't available all day. Evening in the main restaurant was much better with a fine fish curry and excellent service. The high spot for us however was the Mangalorean thali which we had for lunch just before leaving. this was truly delicious but still took some time to arrive and sadly we had to rush it as there was a train to catch. reception staff were very friendly but on checking out for some reason I had to wait nearly 15 minutes for them to confirm the one soft drink I'd had from the mini-bar Again not good when there was a train to catch..there is a nice albeit small pool area patrolled by a pair of mongoose. the pool itself is lovely but getting in and out extremely uncomfortable due to the odd design of the ladders which hurt our soft western feet. and there are only a handful of sunbeds situated right near the noisy AC and ventilation outlets.
