I had been to Winter Green Eco Resort with my husband in June 1st week. I did lots of research work, and short listed this place thinking that it would be great to break away from the monotony of the city life.
I was not looking out for a luxury stay at all.. we had the plans of exploring Chikmagalur and surrounding places.
As we entered the resort, we were surprised by the huge but unkept property. Everything was in a mess. Wooden log cabins looked great, but were not so great from within. Dirty and sheets were smelling damp. There were two futons but had no cushion on it. And we are vegetarians, so find it very difficult to find the food of our liking. Infact, if you are a vegetarian and trying to find a decent hotel in Chikmagalur, you'll be disappointed. There are small eat outs which are not so clean. Even though we were not looking out for any fine-dining restaurants, we could not find any simple veg restaurant like Kamat.
The place is quiet, mainly because there weren't many guests, and no hush-bush. There are no inter-com in the room, and if you have to contact the staff you'll have to go to the reception or will have to wait for someone to come down near the dining hall.
There are two big rooms on the upper level are a STRICT NO-NO. Even though spacious, sofas are worn out and filthy. These rooms are dirty, you'll find all sort of insects and rats in it. We shifted back to the wooden cabin, after spending few hours in this room.
The dining hall is spacious. There is one TV in the dining hall, none of the rooms have it.
in short -
Upside-
1.Huge Property
2.Must mention Vasant, Aman and Manju here, friendly and attentive staff. Even the cab drivers are nice. I could not meet Kala.
3.The place is very silent, and if you are going there in a group, you'll be able to have fun.

Fllipside-
1. Rooms are unkept, dusty.
2. Food options are very limited for vegetarians.
3.Garden, lawns and surroundings are not at all maintained.
4. No intercom, every time I needed something, I had to wait for one of staff members to come down to the dining hall, or go to the reception, which is on higher level.
5. There is a small children play-area which is not maintained at all.
6. This place can be called overpriced looking at its current state.
7. Not suitable for couples and elders, if you come down in a group, you'll be able enjoy this place.

A LOT can be done to make this place better. We were talking to the staff and they shared the same opinion that some investment and some interest from the owner can make this place much better place and can attract more customers. They are also understaffed.

Resort is located 10-12 kms away from chikmaglur, this is an eco-resort and hence don't expect AC/TV/Refrigerator, etc. Rooms are quite spacious, clean, well-maintained toilets, good furniture to relax. Resort do not serve any alcohol but you can get from outside. there is no restaurant inside or in the nearby, there is cook inside the resort who prepares most of the items, he cooks good. But if you go for a buffet they will rob you, so better go for seperate menu that you can order for which is relatively less expensive. I would recommend this resort barring the service. Imagine there is only one person in charge for room services for all the rooms, who again does the preparations for lunch/dinner nd manages evrythung like cleaning utensils/rooms, etc. Overall my thumbs up for the place and nature filled resort, but a thumbs down for the poor quatily of service.

We went to the resort for the Christmas weekend and the whole experience was horribly overpriced. We reached on Friday afternoon and checked into the chairman's cottage. The room was not made and had absolutely no ventilation. The people cleaned the rooms and made the bed in front of us. Bathroom was decent enough although lacked maintenance. Rooms don't have power backup during the day. The pathways are decently lit up and I found the general look of the resort to be neat. Lunch, dinner and breakfast were ok and nothing to rave about. However, there are not many things to do in and around the resort. And there is no scenery or view as well. Overall its ok if you are looking just to unwind, relax and do 'NOTHING' but I wouldn't recommend winter greens if there are other alternatives.

it was a purely leisure trip that we planned to chikmangalur. we were in a fix if to take the rail route or the road route. we went by train. the nearest railway station is Kadur, its around 3 and a half hour from bangalore. the wintergreen resort is around 30 kms from kadur railway station. took a cab for 900 rs just a drop to the resort. make sure u book the cab in advance, there are no taxi stands at the railway station.the roads were a joy ride, dont know why there is no improvement on that by karnataka govt. finally landed the resort, few wooden cottages, hardly 3 more families were there. The cottages were damp and the blankets were stinking, asked to change it but didnt get any replacement. we reached at around 11 am, the package was for 3250 rs for one day (which included all meals), but didnt include breakfast for the first day. we were provided with chapatti n chanti (im sure many ll get surprised bout the combo, even we were..). we thot it to be a part of the package, we were not informed bout it. during the checkout they charged 100 rs for 2 chapatti n chatni. then came the lunch, chicken gravy, roti, rice, pudina rice and rasam. nothing for veggies! saw poor north indians eating rasam n roti. they do provide bonfire but for 30 mins, which is a total waste. dinner was customized food of the left outs of the lunch. i hated it. There is no mode of communication from the cottage, no phones, bare min light in the room which made the whole exp in the rooms more pathetic. Chikmangalur is a nice weekend gate way for bangalorians but, do choose the place to stay properly. check out all details before going P.S. make sure u book ur own cab from blore itself, cab facility is too expensive there. Winter greens is a total NO from my side if its a family visit, if u r bachelors u can still enjoy with no facilities ;)
