“The very Grand "Grand Safari"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

The Grand Safari sure is pretty grand! :)
One of the bears tried to cross the road- from right under the safari bus! The White tiger looked magnificent in its small pool- chilling out in the waters we guessed!

“Manage your expectations before you set out...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

A long distance in India cities is anything over 10 km - and in a city with chronic traffic woes like Bangalore, the 25-30 km ride to the park can take what seems like an eternity! The place can be very crowded on weekends, and if you happen to go on a hot day then that adds to the discomfort. Lots of people to be found shoving and pushing around at the ticket lines - the concept of an orderly and well-behaved queue is mostly alien to our country. If you have old people with limited mobility, then be warned that there are not many options where they can spend 2-3 hours while you go in with the kids. The caged boxes on wheels that take you around for the safaris are cramped and can be extremely uncomfortable, but you tend to gloss over it after seeing some of the big cats and other exotic fauna. Go early and book safari tickets - the buses fill up pretty quick, especially on weekends and holidays. Food and drinks are available but if you are hung-up about hygiene, then carry your own stuff. The birds are definitely worth a look. Bottomline - do not expect an African safari, or even anything remotely resembling one! Set your expectations low and you might just come back happy!

“Can make it a wonderful experience; lot more to go...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2012

Visited Bannerghatta National Park. Took the Grand Safari option, tickets were priced at Rs.210 for Adults, Rs.140 for Senior Citizens and Rs.100 for children (5-11). Expectations were high as the charges for a 45 minutes grand safari was on the higher side. There were good waiting shelters and people waited in the order of their arrival. After 15 minutes of wait, we boarded into the bus. Started with the herbivores Safari, saw a lots of antelopes and a few bisons (that's it). Around 5 lionesses and a couple of tigers and 3 white tigers also were seen in the Carniovores Safari. We were back to the starting place in 45 minutes. I was not happy with the speed it was done.

Next was the visit of the zoo. Even though it was clearly written that no plastics was allowed, we found that the stalls selling food inside the park was generating a lot of plastics. The soft drink containers and chips' packets were littered all around and there were no controlling of the same by the authorities.

Interesting thing was that even though it is strictly prohibited by government and courts that no items in India could be sold above MRP, the government owned Bannerghatta National Park was violating the norms by selling Maaza softdrink at Rs.35 (Actual Price Rs.25), a clear Rs.10 above the MRP, i.e, at a whopping 40% increase. All soft drinks was sold at a much higher rate.

We finished the zoo visit in around 1 hour, not so good, not so bad, I can say. However lack of the staff in cleaning and maintaining the zoo was clearly visible. Further, there was nobody to control the public, for eg., saw a few people throwing stones at the leopard and teasing the animals.

An experience which could have been made memorable have been made heart breaking by the sight of littered environment.

Next was the visit to the butterfly park, took a separate entrance fee for the same and entered into the nicely built enclosure. There were a lot of butterflies and a lot of information about butterflies. However, the butterflies seen there were common and not something rare as we expected. The authorities could improve by adding some rare or more species found in different countries or different parts of India. None the less, a good effort.

Bannerghatta National Park should start a website, where in one can give suggestions or volunteer some activities through social organisations/networks and thereby improve the condition of the park to a great extent.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2012

I was very disappointed with this. The "safari" seemed mostly like a bus tour to see animals in cages. Other than a few animals, many of them seemed to be locked within their cages. We were the only westerners on the bus, and the driver and his colleague made sure to put us up front - then they offered to take pictures for us (it is not easy to get good pictures from the bus). Of course, they then expected a tip from us for their services.

We didn't see the zoo itself. The butterfly exhibit was very nice - comparable to ones I have seen in the US.

I can't recommend this to anyone, unless you have little kids, who would probably enjoy it.
