Owner description: Ranganathittu is a bird sanctuary that can be visited throughout the year by bird lovers. Easily accessible from Bangalore, enroute to Mysore, visiting this place is a great option for both children and adults. Visit early in the morning and hire a boat. November heralds in the winter migrants who stay put until March, adding to the already numerous varieties of birds you can see here.

Boating experience to watch birds closely was good
It was a manual boat as the motor boat will disturb birds

We were trying to visit some place near to Bangalore for a day trip and came upon Ranganathittu Bird sanctuary. It was on the way to Mysore, nearer to Srirangapatnam. Try to visit in the bird's migration seasons, you will see huge variety of birds nesting there. And I recommend taking the boat tour which takes nearer to the rocks and trees where they nest, which is not possible otherwise. It is a very good place for wildlife mainly bird photography. You will see some crocodiles in the water too, but we heard they are well fed :-) and mostly rest on the rocks lazying around. If you have kids it will be a learning experience for them as well watching the birds from such close quarters. We had visited in morning hours mostly near to 11 am. But in afternoon we saw many buses loaded with school children coming there. So plan accordingly if you want to avoid the crowd and just enjoy the beauty of the nature.

Very nicely maintained. The kavery river flowing along the santuary is the main attraction. There are lot of birds in the sactuary. The boating in the water, watching the crocodiles and birdis superb.
Nice place to visit with family. Better to visit after the monsoon.

Set amongst a lake and covered by a forest area this place is habitat for migrating birds

You need to a boat and arond this small lake where you can see all varities of birds on the small islands in the lake. Admire the nests build by them

You can also sight crocodiles either resting on the river beds or crossing your boat way

There are gardens here where you can rest and enjoy the greenery around

Ranganathittu is a cute little village some 15 kms away from Mysore. The village itself is very beautiful with lush greenery and flowing waters. The bird sanctuary consists of many islands which are very well preserved and attracts lots of migratory birds. The river is home to lots of crocodiles and we can see them basking in sun on the rocks. The crocs are very peaceful and the birds are in countless varieties. I will recommend any one visiting Mysore to also visit Ranganathittu Bird sanctuary. Boating is also available and we can see the birds and crocs nearby.
