Over 30 years ago we lived in Srinagar, Kashmir. We lived near Nishat Gardens for 15 years studying the ancient philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism with Swami Lakshmanjoo. We had many fond memories of past times living in Kashmir.
My wife and I had reservations for 5 nights at the Hotel Dar-Es-Salam in July 2016.This was during the time when the curfew and fighting had just begun. We arrived at the hotel at 6 am and were warmly greeted by Imtiaz and Rafiq. They made our stay for the full duration very comfortable and calmed our concerns for safety. Although we were the only guests there they prepared the most delicious vegetarian Kashmiri food for every meal. They were also very interesting to talk to and gave attention to whatever we needed. They made our stay memorable and it was a wonderful way to spend our wedding anniversary during those difficult times.
One more thing to add is that the Guest house is well maintained with beautiful, immaculate and comfortable rooms. The gardens are beautifully manicured situated next to Nageen Lake with a very high wall surrounding it.

Room Tip: We loved the room we stayed in on the first floor to the left of the entrance door to the hotel.

We were booked to go to Kashmir from 28 July to September 2, when trouble erupted in the valley and spoilt our travel plans- we had to cancel our entire trip.
When we spoke to the hotel mgmt and explained our predicament, they were so absolutely decent and gave us the full refund for our three booked rooms.
Thank you for being so prompt in your transfer of the money.
Kudos to the mgmt of hotel daresalaam,
I sure to enjoy your hospitality when it's possible for us to visit Srinagar .
Travellers these people are truly decent and their establishment should be patronised.

Stay here if you want to get a real feel of what Kashmir has to offer. Located right beside the Nagin lake this hotel is full of old-world charm and nostalgia. Rooms on the first floor with lounges and sitting-out space have an excellent view of the lawns. Great food and personalised hospitality. Loved that they served so many Kashmiri bread with the regular eggs and omelette for breakfast. Their walnut cake and Kehwa is to die for. We stayed here in March/April 2015.

We stayed at Dar -Es- Salaam hotel in July 2016 for a family reunion.... a largish group of 19 members occupying 10 out of the 14 rooms available at this beautiful boutique hotel. Unfortunately, the day we arrived, Srinagar was placed under curfew due to the prevailing political situation. However, our 3 day stay went off so smmothly, thanks in no small measure to the location of the property far away from the centre of the old city of Srinagar with the serene Nagin lake lapping the edge of the gardens of the hotel. We took long shikara rides on the Nagin lake and shopped for Kashmiri handicrafts, flowers and seeds from Kashmiri vendors who brought their wares to the hotel in their shikaras. The staff of the hotel especially, Imtiaz Ahmed, Shabbir Ahmed, Rafiq Ahmed and the chef Zaheer Ahmed were very courteous and hospitable.. From attending the a large groups diverse demands for room arrangements, specific food requests etc. nothing was too much for them. The meals at the hotel (largely typical Kashmiri wazwan cuisine) was authentic and delicious. However, if you requested them to make any specific dish the chef and his team were most accommodating. What could have been a disastrous vacation, hotel-bound as we were for 3 full days turned out to be a perfect family reunion holiday. From games played on the lawns, to sitting under the shade of the chinar tree reminiscing about days gone by, Dar-Es-Sallam hotel and staff will always be gratefully remembered. The final touching gesture was when we had to leave for the airport in the cover of darkness before dawn, in order to avoid the troubles on the road, Imtiaz and his team were up all night with us and met us at 3 am to handover packed omelet sandwiches, alloo parathas (flat bread stuffed with potatoes and spices) and bottles of mineral water. They wanted to ensure that we had enough food to eat incase the restaurants at the airport were overwhelmed to meet the demands of passengers crowding to exit Srinagar. We left Dar-Es-Salaam hotel with happy memories of our time spent in this very picturesque property.

The property had a homely feel & yet had its unique luxury quotient. The food was absolutely lip smacking but above all the hospitality, warmth & the ever willing staff led by Imtiyaz were a delight. They went out of their way to ensure our group of 19 were not lacking in any way. I have travelled a bit & this kind of genuine, beyond the call of duty reception & warmth is hard to find. The Shikara experience on the quaint Nagin lake almost kissing the property is a must especially at sun-down. The rooms are speacious & have an old world charm about them. The sprawling lawns are great for sit-outs.

Room Tip: the 1st floor above the main reception seem to be nice. I haven't seen the 1st floor on the anne...
