We had recently visited the heaven on Earth (true to all senses) and Dal lake was the starting point. The time was first week of November and Srinagar witnessed the first (early) snowfall this year just one week before we landed. The temperature was around 3-4 Degrees in the morning and went down to -2 degrees in the evening. The Day was extremely pleasant under 3 layers of clothing. And the mesmerising view of the autumn trees , the still clear lake, the colourful shikaras and houseboats, the snow-clad mountains all making it a picture postcard. The early mornings with thin scales of ice on the lake and the fog submerged landscape makes it divine. Not to forget the awesome hospitality of the owner and caretakers of The Prince of Kashmir House boat. Simple but tasty food and friendly nature of the people. Occasionally you will be disturbed by super enthusiastic sellers who come on their small boats and try to force sell you Zaffran, wooden items, Carpets etc. The back side of the houseboats almost takes you to Venice, a bazar which is not on land but on water. Sellers row their boat to you and sell their goods be it flowers, seeds of flowers, carpets, vegetables, spices to name a few. Also there are houseboat shops which you can visit and purchase goods if you wish. The nights are so cold during this time that you have to cover yourself with woollens and stay near sigris provided in your houseboats or may sip Kawa with some Kashmiri cookies.

Take 3 Shikara rides at 3 different time of the day. One early in morning to see floating market, second at Day time to relax and see the city through shikara and at sunset to enjoy the view Dal lake has to offer. Lake is although dirty at some parts, yet it makes a beautiful ride and mesmerizing to watch.

The dal lake is a must see in Srinagar. The shikara ride is a must on the lake. We took about an hour ride. They show you around the lake and there also a floating market to see.

I was stay here for few days after Kashmir Trekking trip, enjoy the self guided tour around the garden and lake, its very tourist area, have to make a deal before you go everywhere around, shikara boat and tuktuk driver will ask more for different services , so... show them your map and bargain your trip deal and enjoy it ;)

My eyes couldnt capture the boundaries of the magnificent Dal lake when i laid my eyes on its pristine sky blue still waters for the first time .It is adorned by the quiet Shikaras either taking the tourists to their houseboats or on a ride on the lake. The blue waters, the blue mountains and the blue sky appeared to be one without any demarcation and you can visualize what a breathtaking view it could be.Most important we felt so safe with our children. The boatman gave us a lot of information about the lake. There are boats that carry tea and eatables. We enjoyed hot piping tea and pakoras. There are no creepy crawly insects to disturb you in the waters and this made our stay in a houseboat on Dal lake super awesome.

Its very commercialised. Not that charming as its use to be 20years back. You will just see houseboats in one line. There will be small shikaras coming along side your boat and keep on disturbing you with soveneirs , food items etc etc.

But if you haven’t experienced it in past then a visit is must
