Our family of five visited Srinagar just before Xmas. Shaft meet us at the airport and took us to the boat, The weather was extremely cold, as there had been no snow yet, but the staff made every effort to keep us warm and comfortable with wood burning stoves.
Special mention must be made of Shafts help when we were 'scammed' into buying carpets that were claimed to be handmade, but were not! Shaft went back with us to the shop where we returned the carpets and took us to a reputable dealer.
Shaft also helped arrange several outings which were lovely. We ate on the boat - the cook was good, and very kindly baked us a beautiful cake on Christmas day.
Although there was a strong police presence in Kashmir (which can be a bit intimidating for foreigners) we never felt personally threatened,
We would love to visit again one day - perhaps in the summer :)
WARNING - We visited Pahalgram and were persuaded by some locals to take a horse ride up the mountain. A few minutes into the ride my daughter noticed that her horse was bleeding caused by chaffing under the saddle. We immediately got off the horses and walked back. Please take great care when hiring horses - its seems to us that they are not treated well.More
