“Visit to Maa Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2011

The main purpose of going to Katra is to pay obeisance to Maa Vaishno Devi. The city of Katra revolves around the temple as it caters to pilgrims from all corners of the world. One has to trek about 17 kms of steep path/steps to reach the temple(It takes about 5 hours),alternatively one can go by hiring ponies and or palkies(they take 3 - 6 hrs).Helicopter trips are also available which drop you some 2 kms from the temple after which again one has to either walk or hire ponies/palkies to complete the last leg of the journey. We had booked helicopter tickets for the visit(@Rs.699/- per head for one way travel)It is quite cheap due to which there is always a heavy rush for the same. The booking for the ticket starts 30 days in advance(only on-line booking is done). However, on the designated day when we approached the helipad/counter we were informed that further helicopter trips had been cancelled due to bad weather and there is no certainity for the day . We waited another two hours hoping against hope that the service will start, but to no avail. Ultimately, we started making alternate arrangement for our climb and hired Ponies (@Rs. 1700/- per Pony )and Palkies(@Rs. 4000/- per Palki). The corresponding official Govt.rates are Rs. 800/- and Rs. 2700/-approx.,but you will never get them at those rates as there is a virtual racket of fleecing the pilgrims who often are short of time and energy to fight against the well entrenched system. Accordingly, we started our journey at 2:00P.M and reached there by Ponies at 6:00PM and the Palkis (carrying aged persons) reached there by 8:00P.M.,The evening aarti had started by then and darshan is stopped during that period. After the aarti ,the darshan started at 9:30 P.M. by which time a huge queue of pilgrims had built up. Ultimately we could have darshan at about 11:00 in the night. We all had some light food as we were fasting since morning and started our journey down and reached there by 4:30 in the morning.Except for the fleecing of the pilgrims by the Pony/Palki wallahs in passive cooperation with the controllers the arrangements per se by the Shrine Board all along the route was excellent with facilites for toilets/drinking water/ rest shelters/eating joints/ tea kiosks etc.I only wish that the Shrine Board takes suo motto cognisance of the excess charges and take steps to control it.

“KATRA SEEMS LIKE A PARADISE ON EARTH.”

KATRA SEEMS LIKE A PARADISE ON EARTH. THERE PEOPLE BEHAVE AS FAMILY MEMBERS. WE GWT AMUSED BY THE BEAUTY OF NATURE. Katra Town, lying in the foot of Trikuta Mountains, 48 kms. from Jammu, serves as the base camp for visiting the famous shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, which is approachable on foot along a 13 kms long well laid footpath. Every year, more than 4.5 million pilgrims pass through Katra on their way to the holy shrine.
The cave shrine of Mata Vasihnodeviji or Trikuta Bhagwati (alt: 5,200 ft.) has been a beacon of faith and fulfilment to millions of devotees from all over the world. The pilgrimage to the Shrine holds great significance for the pilgrims.Katra Town, lying in the foot of Trikuta Mountains, 48 kms. from Jammu, serves as the base camp for visiting the famous shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, which is approachable on foot along a 13 kms long well laid footpath. “Be careful in Katra Jammu”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2010

Katra is a base town to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, and is one of the most favourable religious tourism destination...One has thousands of options to stay in Katra... Just be careful in selecting your accomodation as there r few hotels like NEEL KANTH which have installed micro cameras in the rooms...U need to be very careful s that ur privacy is protected...

“Trip to vaishno devi (katra)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2008

I have visited Katra with my colleages from my college.I should say it is the best trip ever in my life.Katra is in jammu and kashmir and it took around 16 hous to reach there by road.We all booked a bus and enjoyed our time in bus.We reached there next day in after noon and stayed in a small hotel. In the evening we started our trip to vaishno devi temple which is 13 Km from place where we stayed. We all decided to walk and buy stick to help us on the way.We reached temple next day early mornin 3am and slept for 2 hours and then we entered the temple and it was very divine feeling there. After that we had tea and decided to visit 1 more temple baba baironath and it was 4Kms from vaishno devi temple. We reached tehre by afternoon and stayed there for 1 hour and then started walking down to our hotel. We reached our hotel in the evening and then took bath and had dinner. And next morning we went to a hill station nearby Patnitop and reached there by 9 and took breakfast. It was very chilling there. We then decided to play cricket and divided in two teams and that cricket session was most memorable. So by the evening we left Jammu for delhi and reached delhi by afternoon next morning.

“After promise done we visited this place”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2008

We started from mohali(near to Chandigarh) on 23 May 2008 boarding AC-sleeper bus (Zimidara) suffered whole night because the AC duct was broken & it was pouring too much of air inside. Reached Jammu, stayed for one day at jammu, Then we hired one taxi(Tata Indica) for Rs 1000 i.e from jammu to Katra. Half of the way the travel was excellent but soon we faced the flat tire that to we waisted 2 hours on our mid way. Next the driver of Tata Indica managed to get one Maruti Omni and took half of the money from us. Some how we reached Katra and we never opened our mouth because I was with my wife and one year old baby with baby's Param & other stuff.
Next we boarded to hotel Krishna at katra and then left our luggage and went towards Shri Vaishnov Devi Shrine. We hired one Pitthu & carriage holder person for baby's Param & other luggages. It took One whole day & night to do complete all our rituals and came back to hotel with the whole body paining(ache). We took some pain killer and slept for whole day and night. Next day by 4:00 PM or so we left for Chandigarh and we felt very lucky that we got direct Bus from Katra to Chandigarh and that too AC Bus.
Fourtunately I booked my hotel at Katra through internet, else we should have been in more problem.
One lesson I got from this trip was, never trust any travel agent at Jammu.
