During our trip to Manali in March 2012, instead of going to the Solang Valley for enjoying snow, we decided to go to Gulaba. It is about 40 minutes drive from Manali and the place is on the way to Rohtang pass.
It is a mountainous area, about 3600 meters above see level. During winter months (November - end of March) the area is covered with fresh snow. It is a picturesque area with very nice landscape. Ideal fro skiing and other snow games. During winter when the road to Rohtang pass is closed police may not allow every vehicle to go uphill. However, we were lucky to go there at this time.
Unlike Solang valley, Gulaba is clean and neat, not a single building in the area, other than few temporary stalls selling tea, noodles etc. (Solang area is dirty due to excessive human activities there) It is recommended you get winter jackets and shoes from the valley itself, on the way to Gulaba. Children will enjoy a lot - they can do various snow games here. Lovely place!
