If you are to visit only one place in Ahmedabad, that has to be Sabarmati Ashram. Not for its architecture or landscape but for its Spartan simplicity, in which was groomed nation's greatest son, who was aptly called the 'father'. The stoic simplicity of the hut-like dwelling with its meager paraphernalia, particularly the "Charkaha" - the hand operated weaving tool; is the icon of an age which, though bygone, reminds the visitors of the Himalayan strength of the ideology that it symbolize.

I visited Gandhi's ashram 24 years ago and remember its simplicity as central to the wonder of the experience. Now there is a visitors center and a museum near the entrance. These have value, but they intrude on the revolutionary spareness of Gandhi's life and message. But just past the visitor center and museum are the buildings that housed Gandhi-ji and his wife and his movement for 15 critical years, as he began the struggle that liberated India from British rule. It is as clean and pure as before.

No one can walk on this hallowed sand, or step onto the porch on Gandhi's dwelling, walk into its simple rooms or look out on the river just beyond the walls and not feel something of the holy truth force that this saintly man incarnated. Here great things were birthed, and they resonate like an organ note in the sky to this day.

Its located in Sabarmati area at Ashram road. Its one of the home of Gandhi ji and he stayed there for approx 12 yrs.
The most significant moment related to ashram is Dandi March in 1930.
The ashram is converted in museum by Indian got and it is maintained by Gandhi Ashram Preservation & Memorial Trust. The galleries in ashram building exhibit the life and messages of Mahatma Gandhi. In these you will see Life-size oil paintings, quotations, letters and few relics. The two most important items on display are s charkha used by Gandhi ji to weave khadi and the writing table he used for writing letters.
The museum is surrounded by gardens.
