“Third visit since hotel opened always a good experience will be returning in 2013”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

Extremely friendly hotel with competent pleasant staff who cater for all your needs with a smile and professional attitude. We arrived at 07.00 am and reception confirmed our suite was ready, by 08.00 am we were unpacked and enjoying an exceptional breakfast by the pool, a perfect start to a wonderful holiday. Diwa Pool staff together with Bistro restaurant staff all worked extremely hard to ensure we had everything we needed. Enjoyed being able to take breakfast at any time during the day and therefore allowing us to enjoy early morning walks/bike rides on the beach. Room service and room cleaning were also to a very high standard. Courtesy shuttle bus to the beach makes for a relaxing time. Treatment at the Spa was to a high standard and good value for money - definitely well worth a visit for everyone staying at the Alila.

Room Tip: The Alila Diwa block has the quietest rooms (and they are very well equipped). The all day breakfast...

After a busy 4 days in Mumbai we arrived in Goa looking forward to our 10 night stay at Alia Diwa from 17/03/12. The pictures on their web site looked great, but would it be the Luxury hotel we expected?

We booked direct via their web site and declined the offer of airport transfer at INR 1000 it appeared expensive. At Goa airport we opted for the pre paid taxi service located within the terminal which only cost us INR 450. As expected the ride was roller coaster like with overtakes on blind bends ect, but we got their in one piece.

On arrival at the resort we were greeted by the usual security checks you would expect to find at reputable Indian hotels, the gates we opened…

It didn’t look anything special from the front, however entering the open air lobby area we were pleasantly surprised with the interior. Wooden vaulted ceilings, mood lighting and a tranquil feel. We were sat down and brought a cold face towel and small but refreshing cold juice.

Paperwork over we were shown to our room. I booked the bog standard room, it looked good via the internet photos. Our room was located in the “west wing” 1st floor, it appeared good at first glance in the dim light. Our bags should have been delivered to our room shortly after we arrived, but didn’t . A call had to made to chase them up. Our first night was not good!

The room we were allocated had an internal door (locked), connecting us with next door. We were kept up most of the night with extremely loud neighbours, the walls are paper thin and the internal door did not help with noise transfer. In the morning small and irritating issues were apparent ;

The room was by NO means the cleanest, the huge floor matt was filthy with dirt and stains all over, The flat screen TV had unsightly wires hanging down. The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by mirrored wooden lattice covered sliding doors, these were again filthy and unpleasant. Within the bathroom the shower walls had shower gel and dirty marks all over and this particular shower was missing its glass door and replaced with a naff shower curtain.

Our feelings were conveyed to the general manager, we asked to be moved to a quieter and cleaner room. Our request was accommodated.

Our new loft room was a better standard but still NOT 5*, The mirrored doors still covered in finger prints and dirt. There were No fresh flowers, no complimentary wine, only some limp looking apples left in the fruit bowl.

However the grounds within the hotel are fantastic, well maintained and aesthetically pleasing. The infinity pool also looked great.

We found there were NOT enough sun loungers by the pool, most people seem to reserve them by 9am with towels and not even use them, very annoying! Using the shuttle service to the beach we found the same shortage of sun loungers. Only around 20 beds for such a large hotel is inadequate. Nice stretch of beach once you get past the rubbish in the tree line.

The pool water was clean on our arrival but by day 5 it was cloudy and dirty, this was conveyed to the manager , water quality didn’t improve though. There are restaurants within Alila Diwa, (we stayed bed and breakfast). The food at VIVO -al a carte menu was good on our first visit and very poor on our second and last visit. A lot of people didn’t seem to leave the hotel. We did every day/night and found some good food joints one of them being Martins Corner only a 10 minute walk away.

We made enquires at the front desk with regards to taxis/tours and hire cars we were informed to use the guys directly outside the front gates. Their prices were extortionate and they seemed aggressive and rude when we declined their services. We chose to walk to the main road 20 mins away to flag down the local rickshaw drivers.

The men who run the taxis directly outside Alila Diwa are like a mini mafia. Local taxi drivers would NOT pick up from Alila as the Alila crew had made threats to smash up their vehicles as it was their spot only! This left a bad taste in our mouths and we expressed our distaste with the hotel manager.

By far the best way to get around is by hiring a motorbike. We covered most of Goa north and south in our 10 days covering around 300/400 miles and found that Majorda/ Alila Diwa was one of the best resorts in Goa.

There were a few problems, most were sorted out by Alila staff. Although a great hotel in general, the Alila Diwa is NO way a European standard 5* resort. More a 4*. I found it overpriced. I enjoyed our visit, but wouldn’t go back.... Seen it, done it, move on!

Dear Guest,
Sorry to read your comments about your recent stay with us. The team and I are addressing your highlighted concerns very seriously and are looking into the housekeeping and service issues you faced. We are also obtaining quotes to purchase more loungers by the pool for next season and have recently conducted a beach clean up to tackle the garbage issue on the beach. We plan on making this community service a regular feature. Regarding the taxi issues you mention, unfortunately this is a challenge that most hotels in South Goa face, however we will endeavour to sort out the issue through regular dialogue and meetings with the taxi drivers. I understand that this was not the best experience you had with us, and hope that we can invite you back for a more memorable stay the next time around.
Warm regards,
Alasdair

We arrived in Goa, arranged the hotel to pick us up, smooth pick up, arrived at the hotel were greeted by the manager and a lovely refreshing drink. No check inn required we were taken straight to our room, we booked a Diwa room in the Diwa wing, definitely worth it. Check inn was quickly handled in the room. Our room was just perfect big bed, separate seating area, big bathroom and with all the little touches fruit, cookies and a press coffee maker. Headed to the Diwa wing pool, great pool quit and tranquil. The best thing about staying at the Diwa wing was the al la carte breakfast served until 7pm, compliments to the chef who used to serve delicious parathas for us everyday. All the staff were very nice always greeted us. Specially at the pool and special thanks to Abdul for looking after us at breakfast. Check out was as smooth as our check inn, seperate check out desk for the Diwa wing great touch. We would like to thank Alila Diwa and all the staff for making our stay amazing.

For me this is the only hotel I know that serves breakfast at anytime. Yes anytime. Be aware, this is only at the Diwa wing of the hotel. What a beautiful Hotel with finely furnished rooms. Service by staff was excellent. Always helpful but slow. Enjoyed free internet in their business centre. This hotel property is huge and you simply don't feel crowded. Excellent restaurants at the hotel, although we tried other eateries in Goa. This hotel is a short distance from the beach. The hotel does provide a free shuttle service for guests from the hotel to the beach and back. A great resort that has the potential of being excellent. Service levels to be a lot faster than at present. I will not hesitate to return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Without a doubt, the Diwa wing.

Stayed 4 days at the Alila in mid Feb, 2012. It was our honeymoon and having been in Goa numerous times, I was keen on staying at something new - and the Alila is just that. Clean, though it was running full... Quiet, yet throbbing with energy.
One of the best breakfast spreads I've had. Did not try out other dining options at the hotel... as we rented a car and checked out all the nearby eat outs - Martin's, Fisherman's Wharf, Longuinhos in Madgaon, Jhoncy's in Benaulim, Souza Lobo's & Britto's @ Calangute and others.
The service is simply superb - from the waiters @ breakfast to the activity supervisors - everyone was very helpful.
Not being on the beach is a let down - especially since the path is also strewn with horse dung!... but hiring a bicycle at the hotel to ride on the beach is a great idea.
We stayed in one of the terraced family rooms by the spa - and that was a good choice as the rooms are large, well spaced and well stocked too.
The gym is small and has limited choices. All in all a great time. Thanks.

Room Tip: The terrace family rooms are a great idea - very roomy.

Dear Guest,
Delighted to note that you enjoyed your honeymoon with us. Noted your comments on the beach and we have since conducted a clean up which we plan on doing at regular intervals. We also have regular shuttle service to the beach so hopefully that negates the fact that we're not on the beach front. Glad you liked the rooms by the spa and I hope you managed to try out a few therapies during your stay with us. Looking forward to welcome you back for your anniversary!
Warm regards,
Rashmi
