“Glorious Candolim”
Reviewed 22 February 2010

Excellent hotel for value and quiet. It is away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets of Candolim. It is easy walking distance of beach and bars etc in Candolim. It is small and personal with many guests staying for extended periods. Taxi drivers don't really know where it is so you are assured of peace and quiet if that is what you want. We would recommend this hotel if you are on a tight budget as it ticks all the right boxes. Many thanks to our hosts for making our 2 week stay bliss.

I stayed here back in 2008 when I went backpacking with my girlfriend. This place is no hotel but it is a very good hostel, rooms are fairly spacious and very clean, it did smell a bit of bleach but at least you know they've been cleaning! Our room had a double bed with nice clean sheets (not a given in India!), a ceiling fan, seat, desk and seperate shower/toilet room.

It also had a lovely little balcong with two seats and table looking out into the central garden/courtyard. It is literally 2 minuted from the beach in one direction and 2 minutes from the bars/shops/restaurants in the other. I would advise taking a tourch as there is no lighting for this walk. We were given a nice cold bottle of water on our arrival and I found the staff very pleasant which is not always the case. If you are after luxary don't stay here but if you want somewhere pleasant, cheap and clean it's a winner.

On a more general note I didn't like Candolim so much (although better than a lot places like Ajuna) it had a feel of the Costa del Sol sometimes but saying that it is more pleasant than a lot of places in north Goa. If you want something a bit less mainstream travel south to Palolem which takes around 1hr 45min in a taxi (I got up early when they have no business so managed to get one for 1000Rs which was very cheap). Palolem beach is very picturesque and the place is generall geared to younger travelers with some cool bars etc. (stayed at Dream Catcher at north end of beach) or if you want somewhere really unspoilt go to Agonda which is just a bit further north than Palolem. There is a huge, almost deserted beach and a fraction of the guesthouses/bars. The sea is a bit rougher there and I think that's why not as many people go there, there is not a great deal to do but very quiet so just depends what you are after I suppose!

PS. Don't go to the Chinese place on the corner of the main street in Candolim as we both got very ill from the food there!

The owner is a kind hearted person. This reflects in the services. The rooms are quite airy with a balcony. You can sip coffee or read a book there looking at the swaying trees. Surprisingly the toilets are very well maintained. The staff is ever ready to help. The location is just perfect. Imagine you can just walk out for a few minutes and your in the best beach not very crowded. Food is quite costly in the nearby areas you will have to walk up a little away from the beach for decent food with value for money. Its fun to roam around in the market just outside even at nite 2:30AM when the actual fun begins. The whole place around the resort and market is lit with colorful lights makes you feel your in mini Las Vegas. Great Value for your money!!

We stayed there for 3 nights, this hotel is very close to beach (5-10 min walk), you can find lot of renowned restaurants nearby (walking distance) and a super store (I forgot the name), where u can buy necessary things along with variety of liquor. Availability of breakfast menu is very basic, but you can walk at beach shacks to avail variety of foods anytime of the day till midnight. They don’t have power backup, during our stay we experienced 2-3 time power outage for 30- 50 minutes. They have nice small garden and balconies. Most of the rooms are non-ac, and there were no room service (probably we went there during low season). They help us to arrange a two wheeler for roaming around the city (it's the best option in Goa). Mosquito is major problem, they provide mosquito repellent coil but it's better to apply some ointment or using mosquito net.

I have asked them if we can bring our pet with us. It’s permissible. Next time we would take our pet along with us and we stay together.
I recommend this property for stay of not- so leisure vacation.

I read about Tropicano in Lonely Planet, and booked a reservation based on their recommendation. The place has a bit of a backpacker vibe to it, and is very lowkey. The rooms are clean, but the white tile flooring gets dirty really easily (at least it's YOUR dirt!). Even the bathroom smelled a bit like sanitizer when we first got there... and that is a HUGE plus in India. There are no TV or AC, but the showers have hot water 24 hours a day, and each room has it's own small porch or balcony with a lantern/free fuel. IT's about a 5 minute walk to the beach. They will even serve you breakfast in the little courtyard garden (extra cost). My review is based on the price... I was there for Xmas and again around Valentine's Day. You can pay less and get less, and you can pay more and get more. But, for the price, this seems to be a very good deal. One caveat is that Goa is seeing a huge decline in tourism. You might be able to bargain a bit here and/or elsewhere if you really want to make a great deal and have a ton of patience.

  • Liked — location, atmosphere
  • Disliked — maybe a bit too basic.
