We hired a taxi from Tirupati (Rs 2500 A/C Innova) and visited Talakona waterfalls. From the base of the mountain you need to trek for about a km and a half and it was not difficult. The view gets better as you go up. The waterfalls were a beautiful sight...you can actually hear it from half a km away. This being summer there wasn't much water but what was there was enough for the kids to really enjoy.
The water is ice-cold and it literally takes your breath away when you plunge into it first.
Oh, yes....the rocks are REALLY slippery. And if you fall you can really cut yourself on the sharp rocks or end up with a fracture. Cell phones do not work here.
The only negative part was that we were menaced by a horde of monkeys which are absolutely unafraid of humans......they open your bags by operating the zips and take away everything in the bags. They back off only when you wield a stout stick at them. And then they come back again and again. We had to leave 2 people from our group to safeguard the bags while the rest of us enjoyed in the falls.
I would strongly advise you to carry a really strong and long stick to ward off the monkeys.
Do NOT let your kids eat anything while you are at the waterfalls or near the taxi stand....the monkeys will attack the kids in a group and it can get really dangerous.
The monkeys are ABSOLUTELY UNAFRAID TO ATTACK!
The place could do with a nice restaurant. They have cottages but no food! You can buy some ice cream and fruits from the vendors in the parking area.
If you have about 5 hours to spare in Tirupati, head to Talakona falls with a stout stick and you'll have a nice time. The children really had a great time.
