Don't let the guides on the front door bug you. You can be on your own and still enjoy the hike. Follow other travellers and you will know what to see and do. There is a light and sound show which is very good, and sound quality is good as they use "BOSE" speakers, and it will tell you all the history better than any guide with the narrator being "Amitabh Bacchan". Try visiting in the evening time like 4:30PM so the heat will die down and waiting time for the show will be also minimal.

“Wonderful lesson in Indian History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2012

Visited Golkonda Fort on a business trip to Hyderabad...what an enlightening experience. We hired a guide, which I would highly recommend to get the full historical background. The trek up to the top had us sweating before we made it...I couldn't imagine soldiers having to haul very heavy sacks of grain up those steps! Good walking shoes or tennis shoes will make a big difference in your experience.
I loved the ingenous way they figured out how to 'air condition' and heat the king's viewing box at the top! Well worth the trip!

“Very enjoyable experience - takes you back in time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2012

The fact that I have visited this place five times already in the last two years that I have been here shows my love for the place. The entire fort just takes you back in time. Right from the entrance you feel the aura of the place.

The gates open to a small lush garden before you enter the main fort. Soldier barracks are the first attraction that comes your way. Looking at these, you wonder how the soldiers would have felt at their time. The barracks lead to steps which go all the way up to the highest point. In between there are many water tanks for storage, a temple, a jail and few other attractions.

The best thing about the way up is the beautiful view of Hyderabad city. Its just too good. The top of the fort is a different experience altogether. One gets a 360 degree view of the place. From three directions, all you can see is the green lush landscape till the horizon. From the fourth direction, you can see the beautiful Hyderabad city.

All in all, it is a place worth visiting. One word of caution - do take lots of water with you as they have stopped serving water in the premises.

Pretty interesting history piece. Liked the hand clapping area in the entrance to warn the folks the fort at the top. Going upto the top for senior citizens will be tough.

“Son et lumiere”

One of the best Sound and light shows in the country which blends in excellently wit the ambience of the place. A lovely fort from the Qutub shahi dynasty of Golconda. Although a little out of town, well worth the trip!
