This was our first and last time to Egypt - We Personally choose this resort due to the excellant reviews on this site...but differently not excellant in our opinion.
Arrived at the hotel to find that our family had NO room reservation but this was down to the tour operator. Reception Staff were very helpful and once the situation had been resolved upgraded us to Sea View rooms at the side of the lower pool (excellant location). for the inconvenience.
Food - The catering was clearly for the other nationalities (certainly not the british) as the other guests appeared to outnumber the british 9 to 1.
Large queues for chips and toast (so expect a battle)
The kitchen staff would make fried eggs if requested but you had to be firm.
Waiters - Were friendly on the basis that they expected to get tipped and would frequently remind you by calling you back (across the room if required to get your attention) if you sneaked out without leaving a tip, by asking if you were returning for the next sitting.
Would bring FLAT beers or soda drinks that had been left untouched by other guests.
Would repeatedly clean the tables..leaning over you whilst you are eating to wipe the tables down or collect used plates, glasses etc to justify a tip - This got repetative after a fews days as were were not eating the food and were having just a drink and a light snack but they still expected to be tipped for each visit.
Room Service - The person we had cleaning our room would linger around each day to tell us what he had done the day before (again the pressure of tipping) I kindly explained to our room cleaner that if he did a good job all week and we were pleased with the service we would reward him accordingly at the end of the holiday, which we generously did, However our son and his partner stayed next door and didnt have a sufficient tip to leave and requested he come back the following day (the day in which we were leaving) to receive his tip but he informed them that he had to leave that night to visit his family in Cairo - This turned out to be a lie and he was still there the day after...I made sure he didnt go back into our rooms by placing the 'DO NOT DISTURB' tags on the door handle outside.
Entertainment: (Average) The resort employed a russian (I think) animation team who did their best to entertain people during the day and evenings by getting people involved in activities.
I don't want this to sound like a witch hunt against the Russians but the few occasions that I came across any russian's it was usually when they were being rude to the staff or actually pushing in - Apparantly, this is because they have paid to be treated like gods and expect such service and everyone else were infidals - The Main Reason, I found out, was so they could avoid tipping or being expected to tip...this appeared to work as the staff expected nothing from them!!!
Location: Walk out of the resort and you just have a small supermarket across the road who know that people will leave resort to get cheaper items but they still try and bump up the prices but you can still haggle with them - Otherwise unless you want to go to the next resort the nearest 'Proof of life' is either the desert or Naama Bay and after our experience of Naama Bay I would prefer to take my chance in the desert (see Tips below)
Reception Staff - All very helpful
Pool - We tipped the towel lads at the side of the pool each evening (5 TL = 0.50p) and they would ensure that they reserved our beds for us the following morning.
Pool Bar Staff - we tipped the pool bar staff each day (10TL = £1.00) and they would constantly bring us cold (or hot) drinks to our beds - a benefit if there was a queue at the bar (which to be fair ..wasn't often).
The Sea food Restaurant is probably the best location to eat and does not just serve sea food but a variety of other foods, staff were less intrusive and the environment was more like a proper restaurant without the hussle and bussle of the top restaurant and did not smell of a sea food joint (otherwise my wife would not have gone)
Resort is clean and fresh
Rooms are clean and have 42" wall mounted TV's (with some english channels) and are reasonably spacious.
Bathrooms (shower) are a bit dated and are just about passable (there is a wall mounted hair dryer which is reasonable powerful).
Each room has a battery operated 'digital coded' safe (this is included within the cost of the room)
Air conditioning is excellant
The sliding doors to the balcony only lock through a push up lever which can give the impression when pushed up the door is secured however on close inspection the door could be opened simply by moving the door from the outside which dropped the latch of the door to gain access. I put tape on the underside of the latch to prevent it from dropping down. This was also done on our son's door which also did the same.
Take plenty of 5 & 10 egytion notes for tipping
Only Tip if you are happy with the service and do not be pressured.
Take a tip from the russian handbook and be firm (but 'british' polite) if you require something (ie fried eggs if they are cooking omelettes)
Avoid Naama bay like the plague...I have hassled in Turkey and Tunisia but this is on a larger scale and was very intimidating...man handled and harrassed every 20 seconds.
You will get people 'politely' touting for business on site...i.e. spa, tattoos, pictures and excursions with promises of 'good' discounts but on 2 occassions (photos & quadding in the desert) the prices changed when we went to book or purchase...I challenged both these with disappointement as you almost feel conned and obliged to go along with them but I firmly stuck to my guns on these.
As the food manufactured on site were not suitable for reasonable consumption, we frequently ordered food in from Pizza hut, McDonalds and KFC who all delivered to the gatehouse and this was acceptable to the reception staff who would notify us of its arrival and would sometimes offer to take us to the entrance of the resort (in the resort 'golf' buggy) to collect from the delivery person. You got larger portions than in the UK and for slightly less and it tasted exactly the same (i.e.KFC would deliver 4nr chicken burger meals with fries and cans of pepsi for 200 TL = £20 inc. delivery)
Soho Square - A hassle free zone ...designer shops, bowling alley, the queen vic, pizza and burgers from the underground restaurant...Dancing Waterfountains.
A return taxi trip from the resort to any of the above excursions cost £10 or 100 TL for the 4 of us (usually a 15-20 min trip each way) the safety way to travel out of resort.
I hope the above is of some use to someone travelling to the Coral Beech Resort
