“If only we could live at Hotel Alfiz...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2012

This is a *beautiful*, well located, small hotel. Our room (#3) was a decent size and had all the bells and whistles - AC, DirectTV, safe, fridge, nice bed, huge family-style bathtub and room for my son's play pen. (The hotel provided the play pen.) While the room wasn't huge, it felt large because of the high ceilings and the bright white walls.

We stayed here for five nights and loved that we could walk absolutely everywhere in the walled city. I think we literally walked every street. The staff is very informative and friendly without being intrusive. Also, they put up with us and our sometimes loud, cranky toddler son for five days!

The breakfast is fantastic - fresh juice, fresh fruit, egg dishes, patacones, toast, coffee. Yum.

If you are traveling with a small child or a person who has mobility limitations, I recommend staying on the first floor. Also, if you or your companion is modest, you may not like the configuration of the rooms - or at least Room #3. The bathtub/shower is integrated into a corner of the room and the toilet is separated by a louvered door. It didn't bother us, but it may not be ideal for all guests.

One more thing - a nearby plaza is being renovated, so there is some construction noise but we could barely hear it from our room. I think that wherever anyone decides to stay in Cartagena, however, there will probably be construction noise nearby as this city seems to be in a constant state of restoration and maintenance. Afterall, it is OLD. That's the point, though, right?

Stayed here for 3 nights in Feb 2012. The hotel staff were all very friendly and super helpful. The proprietors live in the hotel as well so everything has a great personal touch. The rooms are beautiful! Great charm, perfect for a romantic getaway. Although note that if you get a standard room the bathrooms are pretty much part of the room with limited separation. For some this may be a little too close for comfort so make sure to ask about this when making your booking. Other than that this place was fabulous. Very romantic aesthetic, clean, safe, extremely well located in the heart of all the touristy stuff. Would definitely recommend this place hands down!

Beautiful hotel with helpful friendly staff, good breakfasts, large rooms some with living areas. A small pool was inviting at the end of a hot day wandering the colourful streets of Cartagena. Fantastic location right in the heart of the old town but quiet at night. ATMs within seconds of the hotel for extra security (although to be honest the city felt safe any time of the day). And if you are planning to travel down the coast and come back to stay in Cartagena then the hotel is happy to look after any luggage until your return. Excellent. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Alfiz Hotel. The location is very convenient to all of the sights and restaurants in the old city.

Our room was spacious and well appointed. Some reviewers complained about hard beds but my wife, who has a bad back, loved the firm mattress.

The staff couldn't have been friendlier and more helpful. Their restaurant recommendations were terrific. They helped us plan our journey to Mompos.

Breakfast was good - juice, fresh fruit, eggs, bread, and other options.

I highly recommend the Alfiz.

The small, wrought iron "Alfiz" attached to the wall is so subtle a marque that we almost passed by. Located in the heart of the historical city with its twisting streets and hanging balconies, the Alfiz was originally a XVII century colonial house, impeccably restored. Stepping into the reception area, we were transported to a different time and place.

We arrived late at night and were shown to our room. After a hard day’s travel, our sagging spirits soared. The room featured a king-sized bed covered with a lace spread while the lamps, tables and chairs were tasteful antiques. The bath was large; its fixtures and amenities, noteworthy. A small, plant- filled balcony that opened to the street completed the room's landscape. We weren't able to check out other rooms, but the hotel’s website shows a full range of accommodations.

Breakfast was served in an intimate garden setting and consisted of an assortment exotic tropical fruits and juices, a bread basket, hot dishes to order, and delicious Columbian coffee. Other facilities: a library with wi-fi, a reading room, a small sun deck, and a roof-top dipping pool.

The Alfiz is stately and elegant, but never stuffy. Because the friendly staff always treated us with such genuine hospitality, we felt welcome and could easily relax. If ever we return to Cartagena, the Alfiz would be our hotel of choice.
