This modern and well laid out museum is a great introduction to Uyghur history and culture. A highlight was definitely the mummified corpses which were amazingly preserved in the desert climate. Other interesting displays were ancient ceramics, art, and musical instruments. Don't miss this great museum.

This museum was full of interesting and strange sights. The mummies found in the Taklamakan desert were not disappointing and weird. But the most weird was the Chinese tomb guards - half animal half human. And then there was the extensive display of each of the minorities - happily dancing and playing musical instruments. I have included them in the photos enclosed. I am sure this is how the Chinese Govt. would like you to see the happy, singing and dancing minorities - especially the Uighers. It is worth noting that once you move into Xinjiang the security increases and by the time you fly to or move around Kashgar - there are security people everywhere - mainly SWAT response teams - every 200 metres along the Kashgar main streets.

Arrived on a rainy afternoon on 5th Oct and made the mistake of having the GPS search for Urumqi national museum, which was about 5km by car from this museum. Managed to get correct directions for this museum and arrived at almost 4pm. Last entry to the museum is 4.30pm and they start to push you towards the exit from 5.30pm with a hard close at 6pm. An excellent journey into the many cultural and ethnic groups in xinjiang. Throughly insightful. A pity if your command of Chinese is limited one will lack quite a lot of details.

We visited this place early in the morning to avoid the crowd

There are sections dedicated to the minority group of tribes in xianjiang

The wax statures are lively

They also showed many original mummies unearned along the Tianshan area at least 3 thousand years old

The clothings of the tribes showed detailed arts of embroidery

Worth visiting!!!

I visited the museum on my first day in the city, and it set up a great picture of the place I was visiting. This museum has both ancient and modern exhibits (mummies!) and plenty to read in English. Easily finished in half a day, and there are many local food shops around the corner for lunch. Free admission.
